Red Tide is a serious problem.
People have consistently used the term "red tide" for dangerous algal blooms.
Red tides produce a neuron toxin that affects the brain. Shellfish, which feed by filtering water, build up and concentrate the toxin. It can also build up in other species.
The problem is with the algae and not with the shellfish. If I heard a red tide warning and saw algal blooms in the water ... I would steer clear.
BTW: Algal blooms are a natural occurrence; Pollution, fertilizers and other human activities seem to make it worse.
The term red tide scares people because it is a scary thing.
