This Beach is CLOSED!😳
What is a “Red Tide” Silvertop?🤔
They don’t tend to use this technology anymore. Most people had no idea what a “Red Tide” was, and I think it was scaring the tourist!🙄
Now days, if pollution, bacteria, viruses or chemical pollution, is found in shellfish they will temporarily shut down fishing along known polluted beaches.
The beaches remain open for people!😇
Because shellfish live in the sandy beaches, they can potentially have high levels of contamination!😮
It’s this concentration of contaminants, that’s the problem……….
Silvertop relocating from the Mountains many years ago, and uneducated about “ Red Tide”, avoided these beaches..……just as visiting tourists would do ! 😬
The beaches are perfectly fine, just don’t eat the shellfish Lol!😇
Step over to the “ Estuary “, where fresh water meets salt water, and you have different problems!😮
In these brackish waters an invasive European green crab has been spotted!
Apparently, they destroy the eelgrass that is extremely important for salmon habitat!
Untamed beauty, that’s the best way to describe the Ocean!
With a continuous cycle of marine life happening just below the surface of the water…….. or below your feet in the sand!😊

Red Tide is a serious problem.
People have consistently used the term "red tide" for dangerous algal blooms.
Red tides produce a neuron toxin that affects the brain. Shellfish, which feed by filtering water, build up and concentrate the toxin. It can also build up in other species.
The problem is with the algae and not with the shellfish. If I heard a red tide warning and saw algal blooms in the water ... I would steer clear.
BTW: Algal blooms are a natural occurrence; Pollution, fertilizers and other human activities seem to make it worse.
The term red tide scares people because it is a scary thing.

I miss the beach! It's great that you have warning signs up near the beach. Hopefully, visitors will pay heed and remain safe while visiting and admiring the lovely view. Stay safe and well. Happy midweek!

Sounds like from some of the replies I’ve got that red tide can be extremely dangerous!
I still see people swimming in this water, now I question how safe that is !🙄
When we get red tide in my area you can hardly breathe it's so bad. It's like everyone gets a cough and sore throat. Cheers @silvertop!

There's a children song about the traffic lights in Croatia, and one of the verses say: "Red means stop!" 😆
That's why tourists and Silvertop stay clear of the beach. 😜
But, on a serious note, red tides can be dangerous, I'm guessing that was not the case here. Better safe then sorry

One day, we watched them drop shellfish on the rocks to break them open, the next day we watched them diving under the surface of the water for fish!😊
