Central highlands of Sri Lanka is a protected area of land which locates in the south-central part of the country, 8200 FT (2500 metres) above from the sea level. This includes the three main sites; Horton plains national park, the peak wilderness protected area and the Knuckles mountain range. The picturesque beauty and the rich biodiversity of the highlands have made it a world heritage site, based on the uncountable natural value of the site.
It has been reported that half of the Sri Lankan endemic flowering plants and 51% of vertebrates are located and preserved in this area. This is one of the most outstanding eco-regions of the country since it provides home to a number of endemic mammals and to many bird species. The western-purple faced langur, the Horton plains slender Loris and the Srilankan leopard are among these endemic and endangered animal species found in this biodiversity hotspot.
Knuckles mountain range, called by the locals as "Dumbara hills" is a set of misty mountains which span through Kandy and Matale districts. The fascinating mountain sceneries with beautiful rivers and waterfalls alongside, turn the mountain range into a paradise, taking the breath away from any visitor at the very first sight. Horton plains, declared as a national park in 1988, is popular for trekking and for its rich biodiversity. The leopards, Sambhur and wild boar represent the wildlife of this land and much of the flora and fauna found in this region are endemic.
The peak wilderness sanctuary spreads over a land off 224 square kilometres around the Sri pada mountain. This site is well known for its massive and rich representaion of wildlife, which is still conserved. The central highlands were recognised as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2010 for its being one of the major attentions of rich biodiversity. So, if you have not visited there yet, mark it down as the next destination in your travel journal, since you should indeed get this experience at least once in your lifetime, in order to wind-down or patch up the wander-lust inside you!
