In a thrilling encounter during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Australia faced Afghanistan in a crucial group stage match at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The stakes were high, with both teams vying for a spot in the semi-finals. Winning the toss, Afghanistan chose to bat first. Their top-order batsman Ibrahim Zadran played a stellar innings, scoring 129 runs. Supported by Rashid Khan and Ihsanullah Janat, Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 291 runs for 5 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Australia’s chase was led by the explosive all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who smashed an astonishing 201 runs off just 128 balls. His innings included 21 fours and 10 sixes, single-handedly steering Australia to victory. Despite Afghanistan’s spirited bowling efforts, Australia secured a nail-biting win, reaching the target with just 3 wickets remaining. Maxwell’s heroics earned him the Player of the Match award, and Australia’s win solidified their position in the knockout phase. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s valiant performance ensured their spot in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
