What Has Dance Done For You?

My life had always been a quiet one, way to quiet that I sometimes felt I really had nothing to offer in this world.

Growing up with a lot of self esteem issues, I had drowned in my own fears for a long time, fear of how the world saw me, fear of how I was of no use anywhere. Life didn't really have any meaning to me because I hardly had friends, i had people I talked to casually, people I knew but they weren't actually my friends. I was as antisocial as the word antisocial itself.

Throughout my elementary and secondary school days I had strived to discover and ignite that spark in me. I tried different things, and each time I just found myself stuck half way, losing interest and feeling unfulfilled. Something was missing. Something was really missing and I felt it.

Years came and I started to open up more, in senior secondary school I started to socialize more, talk to people more and play a lot of football. At that moment I thought I had found that missing piece because I became so passionate about the game of football. Sometimes I'll leave home in the afternoon to go play football and I'll be at it for hours untill I got so tired. I kept at it, sometimes if covered that empty part of me, the celebrations after scoring goals felt like the word "heavenly".

I started to improve and play it more until I discovered that I hated losing, each time I lost it really got to me and sometimes I got emotional about and with time I started to drift away from it.

Then, out of the blue, I found "dance". It had been with me for a very long time but I didn't acknowledge it, it was inside me screaming to be let out but I always shoved it aside and always ended using irrelevant things to cover it up.

Dancing became my hobby, I started to improve on it little by little. I took it leisurely and didn't really pay my whole attention to it. I don't know how it happened but dance chose me and it kept pushing me. Every where I went, from church to school to television programmes and music videos kept hitting me hard and I could feel it's force.

In 2017, I gave in and became part of a crew called "Light House Academy" and I was particularly happy to be part of that crew. I soon found meaning in the name and saw what a Lighthouse actually did. Little by little we ended up changing people's lives, without even knowing it we brought smiles on people's faces and gave them a reason to live again.

Since then, I've been giving dance all the passion I can afford and it pays me back by giving me peace of mind, happiness, joy, hope of a better tomorrow, life, food and of course confidence. Most of all it has given me a chance to make others happy too.

What has dance actually done for you?

We are on the same track probably but there is a little difference...

I never left football, I lose and felt pained but and i didn't hate or give up on football..

My secondary school days, I do dance just for fun and I love good songs so I always watch dance and music videos, learn ne dance steps and show to my friends on Wednesday where we have sports time..

I didn't pay much attention to dance than football, because when I left secondary school, I didn't get to dance in the university.. I met a lot of dance crew and good dancers and I felt I won't be noticed if I start dancing..

Not forgetting the question

What has dance actually done for you?

I didn't get much from dance financially but I was so famous, I gained lot of fame in secondary school and a little in the university and I got some money from cowbell dance competitions, some birthday dance competition and some as gift...

Presently I dance when I feel like and when I'm moved by a celebration but I'm still addicted to football...
