Yes, it was a bit awkward for me too. I was thinking, was it some test, or maybe a distraction from something else happening, or...?!
There is also a possibility that the young man was just (in some way) showing off in front of a girl.
We would probably never know, but I'm OK with it (not knowing what was actually behind that weird question)as long there is no bad consequence.
