Busy Day of Walking and Discovering some of the Covered Passages of Paris

Christmas is coming... have you got your presents ? If you walk in Paris, that seems to be all that is on everyone's mind. It's normal and understandable that everyone needs comfort and reference points at the moment, with what's happening in the world.

I don't support the consumerism that pushes us to buy more and more and to be bound to the material, but it is in the nature of the human species to have a privileged relationship with objects and to want to keep them. Of course, this simple sentence can be adapted to whether it is a necessary object, a good quality Japanese knife or a tool, a momentary consumption object, food, or a superfluous object, your 47th jumper for example... ^^ I reassure you, I don't know anyone who owns so many pullovers !

In the same way, it is natural to want to offer something to the people you love, afterwards, it all depends on the intention you put in this action. I don't dispute the strength and need for traditions, that's also what binds us together, but I still have a problem with the idea of encouraging consumption. But there are a thousand and one ways of offering useful things, and this is partly what motivates me at this time. Finding something for everyone that will please and surprise them.

Don't talk about gifts that are drawn at random, I hate that! A gift is made for one person, not another, that's how it is ! At least, that's how it is for me :)

IMG_0938.JPG

My day's walk starts with this bookshop "le Phénix " which is a place where you can find all kinds of literature from the Asian world. It goes from manga, to haiku books, to travel guides, to Japanese or Chinese recipes and nutrition techniques.

It's a place I'm not supposed to have known for much more than a couple of years, but since I discovered it, I've been going there quite regularly.

IMG_0719.JPG

As soon as you enter, you come across the selection of the moment, which is quite relevant and well presented, all with logical links that bring it all together.

IMG_0718.JPG

IMG_0720.JPG

I'm quite tempted by this book on shinto, but I'll end up taking the one on Imanishi, a Japanese ecologist, primatologist and anthropologist who militated through his research for a more natural science than the West understood and still understands. I can only recommend you to read it, it is fascinating !

IMG_0721.JPG

I really like their decoration and the atmosphere that emanates from this place, it is modern, but there is still a soul and a calm conducive to the discovery of beautiful works.

IMG_1032.JPG

I also take a few books from this publishing house which makes recipes centered around a food. This time it's miso, ass and yuzu. All to be given to different people of course :)

IMG_0942.JPG

IMG_0947.JPG

A few steps away, there is a whole network of covered passages that criss-cross this area of central Paris. The one we start with is called "le Passage du Bourg l'Abbé". It is also called "le Passage des cariatides", it is two women of ancient inspiration who seem to carry the lintel as columns.

IMG_0727.JPG

Inside, everything is very calm and quiet, there is a café, a restaurant and a cabinetmaker's shop. You can see the boards in the distance on the right...

IMG_0964.JPG

But here is already the second passage, almost opposite the end of the first. This time it is "le Passage du Grand-Cerf". Its name comes from the fact that it was built on a former square where the Grand Cerf hotel was located, an institute established before the Revolution.

IMG_0957.JPG

IMG_0958.JPG

It is considered to be one of the brightest in the capital, and indeed, its glass roof is truly magnificent while remaining quite simple.

There are quite a few print shops, antique shops and fabric shops inside.

IMG_0962.JPG

I'm hesitating to buy some of these beautiful tea glasses, but I'm visualizing our cupboard right now and that dissuades me from buying anything more ^^ !

IMG_0954.JPG

This is the other side through which I enter the street. A wide and above all very high opening framed by two small restaurants.

IMG_0966.JPG

Our third and last of these passages is not covered and is located more towards the Seine, between the Etienne Marcel metro station and the Centre Pompidou museum. It is the "Passage Molière" ! No, the famous actor didn't live there, but a theatre bearing his name was just next door... In this alley, there is the Maison de la Poésie and a bookshop that has just opened.

IMG_1033.JPG

That's where I find this book quite funny for us today, "The Art of Swimming " by a 17th century author, Melchisedech Thévenot, quite a name anyway !

IMG_0968.JPG

IMG_0980.JPG

Speaking of the Pompidou Centre, I'm just passing by, but I just cross the square and sit down at a terrace to have a coffee... I contemplate this black mirror for a while and as no one comes to take my order, I leave without having had anything to drink, but having been able to enjoy sitting for a few moments.

IMG_0971.JPG

IMG_0972.JPG

After this invisible coffee, I move on to a search for a pan. As with every purchase, I do my pros and cons and look at the different options. For the record, I very rarely buy on the internet and almost every time I do, I have problems !

But this time, it was a simple overview and I leave empty handed :)

IMG_0987.JPG

While passing by the place de la Bastille, I see this little joke on a wall... Small joke, yes, because it's on the wall of the Banque de France ^^ !

IMG_0730.JPG

One of my last stops is in this delicatessen where you can find everything and where everything is good above all. I would even say that the products are of exceptional quality, all in an amazing atmosphere! It is really a place to see in the Marais district.

IMG_1035.JPG

Finally, I buy Sichuan pepper for my mother, the other package is an unground curry mix, but this one is from another shop...

IMG_0735.JPG

A real last stop at a café terrace for two hot chocolates, not far from the Picasso museum, still in the Marais district.

It's 5pm, the night is falling, it's cold and the day has already been full, no excuse not to go home !

I hope you are well and that you enjoyed this little tour :)

Take care and have a good weekend <3

I got some presents but I need to go to mall to buy some. But everywhere seems so crowded so I just ordered online, hehe. And to assure that it will not frustrate me, I checked first on the reviews if it has more than thousands of good reviews, so I will add it to cart. By the way, the place is so cool and relaxing. I have not been to Paris but I view it as a dream place. And it was a great time to end at the cafe. Have a great day and take care.

Hey @pinkchic :)

Thanks you for you visit here ! Paris is indeed a beautiful city, but there's some darker points also, like everywhere I guess.. Yeah, you've to be strategic if you order online, I don't do it very often, because each time or so, I get disappointed... For example, I currently waiting a camera that was supposed to arrive in 5 days... 10 days I'm waiting and they even didn't ship the thing haha ! Hopefully I became much more patient ^^

I hope you're having a pleasant weekend ✌️🌟

Good morning from Washington, DC! #MarketFriday thanks you for being a part of the challenge! Paris is always a good tour and frankly, you do it so well. The covered
passages are really nice. We have few to none here, only underground passageways that keep you dry but are not nearly as beautiful for the city.

I do not like to buy and buy for Christmas. Many times I like to give experiences. Sounds silly, yes? But, we have so many things that most people do not need other things Making gifts as you do is brilliant. You are skilled and that is handy, but, everyone can use the skill they have. By the way, I couldn't resist! I jumped ahead and looked at your next post where you made the gift! Sorry! But, here I am!

I had a big smile that you got a free sit and didn't even have to buy coffee. This was your lucky day! Thank you for the tour and it is always appreciated when you take us on a private walk about there.

Love those shops!! All of them! I don't like buying on the internet. I know, it makes me feel so out of touch. Everyone buys everything online. I want to touch it, and look at it in person. I like going about it. Who likes being cooped up i the house or office all day?

Thanks again! You give the best tours!

Don't miss the small things in your life, they usually make no noise but can be indicators of bigger things. I enjoy learning more about you and hope you feel the same, that is why I find it important to take the time to read a couple of #MarketFriday posts and leave a genuine comment. It is important for a community to do this, learning about others, and getting to know each other. The fun is in getting to know people and making a positive contribution to community life. All this fun and money too. What is not to love? That is one of the reasons I joined Hive. How about you? :) I leave you with the guidelines. I hope you are having an amazing week!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service. It can be a movie, an auction, or even a museum. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or product.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive? Did it go up or down? A scroll of pictures with few words doesn't usually work.
  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess about some.
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  5. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you very much for your visit in the covered - or not- passages of my articles and tours :)

Yes, online shopping, my god, this is something ! Last time, I was looking for a simple spatula, simple but of a specific brand and that I appreciate for its quality. Well, I went to maybe ten shops specialized in kitchen utensils, many of them where I knew I could find it or had seen it before... Nothing, not in a single place! They were all different size shops, and when I came home empty-handed in the evening (fortunately) I had found other things, I saw that all of them sold this spatula on their website while none of them had it on site. Worse, none of them could receive it from them rather than deliver it to me! No, I can understand some things, and even though I'm from the early internet generation, it's already beyond me haha !
Like you, I have to see, feel, touch in real :)

In fact, it happens quite often that I sit, sometimes for several tens of minutes, on the terrace of a café without anyone coming to see me... well, it's mostly winter that dissuades even the waiter from going outside haha :)

Thanks again, I hope you're well 😘
