Mono Monday in St Marys Cemetery
Mono Monday in St Marys Cemetery
Another week begins and I wish everyone a good week.
as is my habit for Mondays I am going to share a few mono shots, this week my subject theme will be from visits to St Marys Cemetery in Dartmouth MA, it is a Catholic Cemetery that had headstones going back to the 1800s, and has a lot of Irish names on Headstones, being of Irish descent I love checking out the names on the headstones.
This first shot is of one of the statues on one of the headstones, worn down by the weather and the years.

Showing the full headstone and you can see it dates back to 1901, so I think its doing pretty well after so long

Not all the names in the Cemetery are Irish of course, Such as the Surname Siravo on this next headstone

Now I got curious of the origin of the Name Siravo and did some research
It is the 308,137th most numerous family name in the world. It is borne by around 1 in 5,949,017 people. The last name occurs predominantly in The Americas, where 59 percent of Siravo live; 59 percent live in North America and 59 percent live in Anglo-North America
Which although interesting I wasn't able to find a clear Origin for the name.
Next up is this lovely headstone for Santos, A name which I do believe originates from Portugal

I mentioned that the cemetery has a lot of Irish names, but had not shared any to=ill now so finishing off with these three headstones from the 1800s for Kennedy's
Kennedy or Kynidi is an Anglicised form the Irish Cinnéididh and Cinnéidigh. Woulfe derived these Irish names from two elements: the first, ceann, meaning "a head"; the second, éide, meaning "Armour"; hence the name can be thought to mean "helmet-headed".

I totally love this photos. I've always liked cemeteries and headstones so much, not quite sure why but it's always fascinating to me.
The info about the names is actually really interesting.
Thanks for sharing this. You have a great talent!
Thanks for your visit and such a kind comment, keeps me motivated to keep posting ;)
Cemeteries always look so much more emotional in black and white, particularly the sculptures.
Thanks for your visit and yesI feel the same, I mostly edit cemetery photos in Mono
Those really are works of art :) ...
Even in the US, the name Kennedy brings thoughts of power... Though it seems like the family could certainly do with some armor at times too.

excellent shots
Thanks
have a great day
there are much better places to visit for sure
Nice shots. I like the first thats a little sepia. Cemetary is always great for mono photos.
Just the other day I had a similar idea in mind, to visit a cemetery about 25km from me and take pictures of funerary monuments, I even saw some that impressed me, but I didn't have time, I was very busy at work, seeing your pictures convinced me to put my idea into practice.
Old cemeteries are fascinating... the monuments and headstones truly convey a sense of the passing of time.
Remember stopping in New Paltz, NY on the way to a retreat some years back. The town was founded in 1678, and there were aging headstones with dates in the 1600's there. I can't even imagine how "raw" the land must have been, back then.

Nice photos, I really like the statues in the cemeteries, greetings.
Graveyards are such an interesting place where to admire all kind of sculptures!
Old cemeteries are very photogenic and have their own charm.
