Traveling the World #225 - Morton National Park @ Yerriyong, Australia

Hi Everyone,

One of the highlights of our weekend away was visiting Morton National Park which will lead us to a waterfall. The national park is located in Yerriyong, around 30 minutes drive from Moss Vale. Due to the recent heavy rain across New South Wales, we had to check if the grounds are safe to walk to before taking our kids there but luckily that week, the rain wasn’t that heavy so it could be muddy but not flooding or in a dangerous condition. We parked our car right outside which cost $4 per car and you need to get a ticket from one of the machines.

There are multiple stop points and the early parts have a nice floor for families to walk on so it wasn’t a hard walk. It was free entry (apart from the carpark fee) so if you feel like you wanted to walk a long way, you are welcome to do so. Our goal is to get to the waterfall and then walk back so we can head to the next destination and keeping in mind the kids might not like to walk too far into the national park. As we walked through, there were many signs to show the different natures around the park. The view along the way is pretty stunning!

1 of the 2 highlights from our walk was The Old Gum Tree which was a huge tree halfway to the waterfall. As we are in winter, the leaves are no longer on the branches and with the constant rain the last few months, the whole area was super damp and wet. It was pretty muddy around the tree area and we need to be very careful not to slip. I was glad to wear my black sneakers so it wasn’t so obvious how dirty it was after the walk.

The next thing was the termite mound. It was pretty scary to think how this was built but it is something we can explain t the kid what it was and make sure they need to be careful when they see these things. Due to the location of the forest, this was the perfect place for a termite to find their food, and no wonder they can build their home right there.

As we walked along, we could see the beautiful waterfall and my little man was taking lots of photos with my old digital camera. The view was just stunning. From the entrance to where we stopped on the other side of the waterfall, it was like a 20-25 minutes walk with the kids one way. After a few snaps, we walked back as a great.

Right at the entrance, there was a gift store which we did stop by to get a small magnet. There was also a room with additional info for kids to under the national park a little more and I suspect that during the school holiday, the park would hold some small groups for kids as there was a nice set up inside with tables and chairs. It was a nice little stop over for us to get some fresh air and visit a new place we haven’t been before. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water if you intend to go all the way around the national park. There are clear signs around the areas we visited with lots of visitors over the weekend.
