Corfu Ramblings

(Edited)

I’m back from Corfu after a week in that intense heat. They have it now in Spain and I am seeing records temperatures being made.

We Brits tend to think extreme heat is great but that is far from the case. Having lived in Phoenix, Arizona for a full summer I know the feeling only too well of daily temperatures in the region of 105F to 120F.

14_IMG_9971_14.jpg

The locals there don’t go outside, and I lived like one while living there.

In Corfu, it was not quite so bad but when it gets so hot, there's little to do other than frolic by the beach or the pool.

IMG_9873.JPG

However, I am not one to get burnt alive while slathering myself with factor 50 lotion and tend to hide in the shade.

Still, I found myself in a depression yesterday while waiting for the mini-bus to collect us.

When you have a view like this from your room, which has ice-cold AC tinged with the stench of sewage, or was it some unfortunate decaying animal that had died in the AC unit…, you don't want to leave.

1_IMG_0026_1.jpg

...'Coffee on the private balcony... she just got out of bed, and I'll probably get in trouble for posting this image'...

I was going to complain about it but it came and went and then we were walking out of the door for the last time.

You can get quite used to the mild stench after a while. Maybe it’s all the explores I have done that has desensitised my nose.

I have visited the coastal resort of Agios Gordios once before, long ago. In 1985 when I was barely out of short pants, I rode here on a scooter with a pal.

There was a dodgy-looking pizza shack and the best beach I have ever seen in my life. I vowed to come back one day and 36 years later, I did.

4_IMG_9936_4.jpg

The beach, for the most part, is not as I remembered it to be shattering those memories, though the far end near that large hotel on the cliff (which is where we stayed), is perfect.

The other end (where I took this snap), is a little more colourful as we were to find out.

7_IMG_9952_7.jpg

Beyond the sign lies the naked people, except there were none that day. There was nobody at all.

8_IMG_9953_8.jpg

An old wreck lay on the beach and so we stripped off and did our first virgin naked bathe. Ah, it feels so good to have the water lapping around your bare balls.

6_IMG_9943_6.jpg

You really ought to try it just once. Covering up and seeing nobody we took off down the beach feeling liberated and changed forever.

@bingbabe had provisionally banned me from doing any exploring.

...‘You don’t know the laws here, you could be arrested’...

From what I read, if you claim a derelict building and don't move out, then in 20 years you can say it is yours.

5_IMG_9938_5.jpg

That was not going to happen and try as I might I could not find anything on trespass law.

9_IMG_9955_9.jpg

The trick is to snap and leave before anyone notices of course. I saw this on the beachfront but it was so fucking hot I could not be bothered.

11_IMG_9959_11.jpg

Properties here are protected by smiling donkeys it seems.

This one (incidentally discovered by @bingbabe on one of her morning runs), I did visit though it was hard work.

12_IMG_0015_12.jpg

When it's 36C you don't want to do anything and within minutes, your back is soaked in sweat.

I could not resist the lure however and will write a separate 'Tales' about this creepy-looking villa.

We did succumb to doing one organised ‘romantic Catamaran trip’ which I now regret.

13_IMG_9889_13.jpg

I must have been pissed or something to even consider doing anything organised. It's too crowded and lying on those trampolines all day will fry you alive.

I felt sorrier for @bingbabe who is not a confident swimmer so could not dive off the boat to cool off.

She was sweltering and any romantic notions had long since diminished when dusk fell and even the hairy backed, round-bellied stony face French bloke sitting opposite us was trying to get it on with his woman who looked more like a bloke.

I can't say I was even happy with the sunset images, with many of the Catamaran guests simply snapping the setting sun.

You need to have something interesting in the foreground and not just the fucking sun!

3_IMG_9919_3.jpg

A boat came whizzing past us and so I captured it. It’s not the best but will remind me of that fateful boring trip. Tilted shots... shocking!

2_IMG_9871_2.jpg

The sunsets from the hotel were nothing short of stunning. With it being set into the mountain and overlooking the western Ionian Sea we were treated to this sight every evening.

Wasps in Corfu are a constant bother. The trick is to take no notice of them.

1_IMG_9869_1.jpg

As a Brit, the natural instinct is to wave your arms frantically about. I had to learn to do nothing, and by the end of the holiday they were tickling my feet and I was feeling just a little uncomfortable.

10_IMG_9958_10.jpg

Sometimes the instinct to finish one off for being too bothersome kicks in. That's the life of the common wasp. Keep away from us you little annoying twats and eat these grapes instead.

I didn’t want to leave Corfu, it’s a fascinating place and different from the other Greek islands I have visited.

I was informed there have been just 40 cases of COVID on the island and yet it was more like the UK before the restrictions were lifted. Go into a cafe, but first attach your mask. Sit down, take it off. Stand up, put it back on.

IMG_0031.JPG

...'the COVID pass, printed version'...

'Who makes these rules up?'

Next time I hope all this COVID testing shit is gone. It’s a pain in the arse but quite straightforward once you get used to it all.

Don't let it deter you from getting out of the UK for a while. Boris will be changing his mind again soon and Greece may be RED again.

It helps to be double vaccinated. If not then you will be subjected to more stupid tests.

Heat would suddenly make you feel uncomfortable, in some cases you will see your body not the way it was, too much of heat is a very big problem

That looks like an amazing place to stay. I have never been to Corfu but world totally be up for it now.

I love anywhere too that you can get a sunset shot. The best ones I have had to date were in Tenerife but those are corkers.

little to do other than frolic by the beach or the pool.

The business!!!

Those fires would wreak havoc on the island as it's very green and mountainous. I saw they had hit one of the other Greek islands and seem everywhere now, even Siberia. We found a better beach after renting a car for just one day, but it was packed with tourists.

The hotel on the cliff was great, every room had that view.. and what a view it was. The trip down to the pool to lay the towels down (you have to do it or get no beds), was arduous. Even at 7.30am expect a sweat labouring back up to your room.. the paths are that steep. I went shirtless after experiencing a soaked sweaty back more than once.

If you like lounging around doing nothing, and getting pissed.. you would love it. AI so cheap beer on tap.. though it was decent. No Pina Colada on the free list... (fuckers), but 9 other cocktails.

Aw, that's a bummer on the Pina Colada front. Me and the good lady are quite fond of limitless Pina Coladas!!

I stayed in a hotel like that in Amalfi once, right up on the sheer mountain around the town and every day was up and down. Even to get to breakfast bar. Although tortuous it did make me feel I was getting a tad of exercise!

Although tortuous it did make me feel I was getting a tad of exercise!

They had a gym that was max 2 people with an hourly list. It was constantly booked up, 3 days ahead.

The missus got pissed off with it and ran up the nearby mountains at 5am in the morning while I snoozed... she's like that.

Haha, I hate the COVID nonsense for what it has done to gyms etc. Still, getting a nice long lie ain't half bad!

Right, it was so hot towards the end of July in Aegean region. We also had to battle with the wildfires mostly in southwest and south of Turkey.

It was all over the Greek news while we were there. One of the islands got hit as well.

I loved it, and sympathies to you. I saw the heat map this morning on UK TV. You are in the middle of it. !BEER.

I would be depressed too, those landscape pictures look great!
We are suffering from the heat here in Barcelona, right now but we plan to spend another week in the Pyrenees mountains, but this time south of France, near Toulouse.
Hope the weather is a little bit cooler there.

Should be fine up in those mountains. We did a little travelling and it's notably cooler up in the hills.

Sounds like a successful trip minus all the minor annoyances.

The COVID testing and all the forms were the most annoying. If you forget one little thing they wont let you on the plane.

You're really selling the place aren't you, with all that talk about the unbearable heat!

Wasps in Corfu are a constant bother. The trick is to take no notice of them.

I can't remember the wasp problem last time I went but it was October. They could have been dying by then. These insects were rampant and one outdoor table where a couple was eating had to be abandoned.

looks like you had a great time, not over crowded, everyone deserves a holiday.
When you do your self test, run it behind you ear instead of up ya nose, I did on my return from Estonia, no false positive gonna happen then!!!

We got the day 2 ones delivered today. I know we haven't got 'it' so don't have any issue doing it properly. It can show an invalid result... I don't want that to happen.

What happens if you don't bother with these other tests when you get back and do nothing? Go to jail, and don't collect £200?

In wales if you dont do them all that happens is you have to extend the "isolation" to 15 days lol

But this covey is clever, if you pay extra you can release your imprisonment after 5 days!!
Now how does that work, Mr covey is floating in the air and is selective as to who he visits.

The scamdemic is a money making exercise for the pharma companies, most of whom are hand in glove with the sleazebag tories

Yes, it's a lot of bullshit I know. The sitting down, mask off, standing up, mask on.. just the same ideology. I sent the test out yesterday.. after fucking mine up due to not reading the instructions properly.

It came back negative yesterday, a day later than the missus one. Mine was opened, sealed, opened, sealed again.. maybe the reason?

@slobberchops I loved the photos, they look great, it provokes to be there until you mention the exhausting heat and the annoying wasps. Hahaha!

I couldn't tell if you're promoting the place or warning me not to go. Hahaha!

Either way I like that you kept your promise to come back despite the years that passed. I too have promised myself to go back sometime to several places in Europe, and I haven't been able to go back to any of them yet, but I don't lose faith.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, I enjoyed the tour through your publication. :-)

Thanks!.. it was a great place.. just too bloody hot when we were there. The wasps are not a big deal and more friendly than these horrible specimens we have in the UK that get drunk on rotten Apples and then attack just for the hell of it.

That must be the European COVID test that's a pain in the arse... or you're doing it wrong. 😁
Looks like you had a great time apart from that. As you get older it's the annoying things that you remember about holidays. Makes you appreciate home more.

It was a UK test that I bought via TUI. They have some deal with a lab and I have to admit the delivery service etc.. and product was good value. If I had to do it again, it would be simple. Same as everything really.., you get used to how things work.

You found a place to trespass there! Mazeltov! I look forward to it. That was quite a place, and abandoned on the beach? What are those laws again?

I lived in Phoenix (actually Mesa) for almost 2 years and my hand got burned on the doorknob before I knew enough to cover them. You just can't make that stuff up. 120 degrees. You know I had to try the egg on the sidewalk!

Never again for me on the Cat. Worst experience ever. Next time, I will rent my own. It's true. It is like being trapped in an oven.

The island was beautiful and the sunsets are to die for... I am glad you had a great time! I hope you got some rest! Welcome back!

I lived in Mesa, just south of I60 (Superstation) and Gilbert Road. Living in an apartment complex there felt like heaven for a while, as mine overlooked the pool. It was a great place but I hated the American work ethics.

Its all about what you are used too, and in the US skilled workers are not treated well (compared to here). In the end, it drove me back home, that and me telling the boss he was an arsehole (which got me fired).

Haha!! Mine was with the government, so it was a little different, plus, I think the work ethic back on the East Coast is far superior. :) I worked in NYC and Connecticut and it was proper business. The South and West seemed more vacation-y.

But, maybe that was me. :) I like the UK better than Phoenix, hands down.

You lived close to me. When were you there?

Close it seems, the apartment complex is still there with swimming pool. It was March 1994 to September 1995. I have great memories of being there, but could not stay due to my VISA being limited to a single company (from which I was fired).

I do write normal stuff (very occasionally!). 2 years ago most of my posts were quite normal and then something happened which made me write UX posts even though I tried to resist... the urge simply overcame me.., it is inexplicable.

It’s a pain in the arse but quite straightforward once you get used to it all.

That's the kind of nonsense that lingers: the kind you decide you can get used to tolerating. It's been 20 years now, and people still tolerate the TSA gate rape and porno-scanners here in the US despite repeated pen tests showing they fail at their one job while they are distracted by fondling grannies and such. Likewise, masks seem more about performative compliance than a rational response to risk.

I suspect COVID passes may become mandatory in the future for international travel. It's a case of -shrug-, we can't do anything about it. Get jabbed or stay here forever.
