Belleville, Asian District in Paris, by Day and Night

Happy Lunar New Year of the Rabbit ! For the occasion, I take you for a walk in one of the two Asian districts of Paris. The first one is Belleville, the second one being located around the Place d'Italie, in the 13th district of the city. For the parades and festivities linked to the new year, you'll have to wait a little longer, as these are organized for next weekend.

But let's start our walk at the Colonel-Fabien station, named after a communist officer and where the headquarters of the French communist party are located.

This building is the work of the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, designed and built between 1965 and 1971. This architect is known for his curved structures, often made of raw concrete. He is known for many other buildings around the world as well as the Brasilia Cathedral and the Brazilian National Congress.

Here, everything revolves around this white spherical dune and the ribbon of the building at the back catches the reflections of the surrounding square.

In this last picture, you can see the bases of the building floating on that side. I would have liked to go inside because the main room is really impressive, but you can check that out on the net.

Even if my focus was not really in the right place ^^ , I still wanted to share this sculpture that can be seen on the left of the dome.

We resume our walk from the north in order to arrive directly in the Belleville district, without passing through the boulevard which follows the route of the metro line 2. Here, a group of brick buildings, typical of the beginning of the last century.

Some architectural landmarks and other small details along the way.

We have arrived in this Asian quarter, which is decorated for the occasion with the traditional red lanterns, stretched between each tree, or across the street.

I stop in a supermarket and take a few snapshots on the fly and think about doing some shopping... But as I'm at the beginning of my walk, it wouldn't really be wise to weigh myself down directly !

As I was saying, the lanterns are everywhere and each one makes me want to go and see these shows more than I have ever seen in over ten years in Paris ! Because of Covid, these are starting up again after a two-year break... What better and more reason than to go and see it all ?

A restaurant known for its famous lacquered ducks. I've never been there, but the opportunity may not be far off, who knows ?

A small architectural detail as I approach the main intersection between rue de Belleville and the boulevard of the same name...

It's almost noon and I'm getting hungry. But I don't want to eat too much and it's a pity that this little pagoda is closed, you can usually find delicious snacks there ! But in the end, I already know where I will go...

This restaurant doesn't look like much, but you can enjoy very good Vietnamese dishes, some more complex and others much simpler like the famous Bánh mì. This is a Vietnamese word that literally means "wheat bread". The ingredients are : bread, meat, grated carrots, cucumber, coriander, white radish, soy sauce, chilli; but there are many different variations.

I opt for one of these mini sandwiches, perfect to last until the evening meal !

The report continues as I walk down to the Canal St Martin. In the afternoon, I have to meet some friends more in the centre, but I already plan to come back in the evening.

Next to an association not far from there, an ashtray to vote with your cigarette butts... The question: "Should we be afraid of death ?" ^^

As promised, I'm going back on my steps to continue my report on this multiple district, between tradition and modernity. I'm going to take some pictures of the colorful and luminous signs, almost all decorated with neon lights...

Personally, I recommend "Chez Yu" for its Bobun and Bánh mì !

The night goes on and I get ready to go home, still on foot :)

Last passage in front of the restaurant with the lacquered ducks, one sees that there was passage, its stock of frontage was emptied well !

Joyeux Nouvel An Lunaire du Lapin ! Pour l'occasion, je vous emmène pour une promenade dans un des deux quartiers asiatiques de Paris. Celui de Belleville, le second étant situé vers la Place d'Italie, dans le 13ème arrondissement de la ville. Pour les défilés et festivités liés à la nouvelle année, il faudra encore un peu attendre, ceux-ci sont organisés pour le weekend prochain.

Mais commençons notre balade à la station Colonel-Fabien, du nom d'un officier communiste et où l'on retrouve notamment le siège du parti communiste français.

Ce bâtiment est l'oeuvre de l'architecte brésilien Oscar Niemeyer, réalisé et construit entre 1965 et 1971. Cet architecte est connu pour ses structures toutes en courbes, souvent réalisées en béton brut. Il est connu pour de nombreuses autres réalisations dans le monde entier ainsi que pour la Cathédrale de Brasilia et le Congrès national du Brésil.

Ici, tout tourne autour de cette dune sphérique blanche et le ruban du bâtiment à l'arrière vient capter les reflets de la place environnante.

Sur cette dernière image, on peut voir les bases du bâtiment qui flotte sur ce côté-là. J'aurai bien aimé aller faire un tour à l'intérieur car la salle principale est vraiment impressionnante, mais vous pourrez aller voir cela sur le Net.

Même si mon focus n'était pas vraiment au bon endroit ^^ , j'ai tout de même voulu partager cette sculpture que l'on peu observer à gauche de la coupole.

Nous reprenons notre marche par le nord afin d'arriver directement dans le quartier de Belleville et ce, sans passer par le boulevard qui suit le tracé de la ligne de métro 2. Ici, un ensemble d'immeubles en briques, typique du début du siècle dernier.

Quelques repérages architecturaux et autres petits détails qui jalonnent notre route.

Nous voilà arrivés dans ce quartier asiatique, qui est pour l'occasion, décoré des traditionnelles lanternes rouges, tendues entre chaque arbre, ou en travers de la rue.

Je m'arrête dans un supermarché et fais quelques clichés à la volée et je songe à faire quelques courses... Mais comme je suis au début de ma promenade, ce ne serait pas vraiment judicieux de s'alourdir directement !

Comme je vous le disais, les lanternes sont partout et chacune me donne à chaque fois plus envie d'aller voir ces défilés qu'en plus de dix ans à Paris, je ne suis jamais allé voir ! En raison du Covid, ceux-ci reprennent après deux ans d'interruption... Quelle meilleure et supplémentaire raison que d'aller voir tout cela ?

Un restaurant connu pour ces célèbres canards laqués. Je n'y suis jamais allé, mais l'occasion n'est peut-être plus très loin, qui sait ?

Petit détail architectural alors que j'approche du carrefour principal entre la rue de Belleville et le boulevard du même nom...

Il est presque midi et je commence à avoir faim. Mais je ne veux pas trop manger pour autant et c'est dommage que cette petite pagode soit fermée, on y trouve généralement de délicieux encas ! Mais au final, je sais déjà où je vais me rendre...

Ce restaurant ne paye pas de mine, mais on peut y déguster de très bons plats vietnamiens, certains plus complexes et d'autres beaucoup plus simples comme les célèbres Bánh mì. C'est un mot vietnamien qui signifie littéralement « pain de blé ». Les ingrédients sont : pain, viande, carottes râpées , concombre, coriandre, radis blanc, sauce soja, piment; mais il existe pas mal de variantes différentes.

J'opte pour un de ces mini sandwichs, parfait pour tenir jusqu'au repas du soir !

Le reportage continue tandis que je descends vers le canal St Martin. Dans l'après-midi, je dois retrouver des amis plus dans le centre, mais j'ai déjà prévu de revenir en soirée.

À côté d'une association non loin de là, un cendrier pour voter avec ses mégots... La question : "Faut-il avoir peu de la mort ?" ^^

Comme promis, je reviens sur mes pas afin de pouvoir continuer mon reportage sur ce quartier multiple, entre tradition et modernité. Je vais surtout prendre quelques images des enseignes colorées et lumineuses, presque toutes garnies de néons...

Personnellement, je vous recommande chez Yu pour ses Bobun et Bánh mì !

La nuit avance et je me prépare à rentrer chez moi, toujours à pied :)

Dernier passage devant le restaurant aux canards laqués, on voit qu'il y a eu du passage, son stock de devanture s'est bien vidé !
