We Are Alive! October 31st, 2022 Extortion

Bit of a stressful day today as the bills for the Urgent Care came in. It's nothing short of extortion.

A lot of phone calls, negotiating and being on hold. Eventually I was able to get the bills down about 50%, but it's still a lot of money for something so simple.

While we were away from home, we brought our child to the "Urgent Care". Dr. looked at him, did a test, prescribed an antibiotic. Nothing we couldn't have done ourselves... except get the medicine. All we needed was the medicine.

We are grateful that the boy is well again, his fever broke and he enjoyed the remainder of our trip. Yet all the red tape and costs are enraging, it's extortion. It's a racket to make people feel like they have no choice but to dump their earnings into the black hole called "health insurance". Or surrender their bodies to the government with "universal healthcare".

No thank you.

Our children are well taken care of, they are healthy and we as parents are capable and able to make informed health decisions for our children - but that ability is taken away from us when we are forced into an "urgent care" facility ($409) to see a doctor ($383) for a prescription (permission) to purchase a medicine ($200).

We tried getting around all of this by contacting our pediatrician directly for a prescription, but all she said was go to the ER. Takes the liability off of her.

So today was negotiation day. We negotiated the urgent care bill down to $216, the doctor bill to $306, and we got the medicine for $36. This is how we know it's all pure profit for them, if they're able to knock the price down by almost 50% simply by talking with them. It's exhausting and frustrating, but it's worth the time and effort.

I'm very tired now.

Sorry to hear about the huge expense for a visit to the doctor that you got Benjamin, and even more so as this was the reduced price, I hope that the situation can improve, take care and stay !ALIVE

Thank you. The situation is manageable, it just takes some work. I've heard that if there is an emergency "life flight" to an hospital on a helicopter, it's thousands of dollars per mile - a friend of ours showed us a bill for almost $100K, just for an emergency helicopter ride. I can't even imagine that situation.

I thought that in my country medical services were expensive, but in fact they were charging you quite a high amount, I hope that in the future you don't have to go through the same thing.
Stay alive.

Thank you. I think the high prices are a psychological operation to change behavior - mostly accepting that medical costs should be viewed like a mortgage.

That sounds totally insane!!

How can it be so expensive just to get a prescription!?

We had private healthcare, but all the costs are covered and there isnt any co-pay. That sounds like a disaster.

It is outrageous. Had we brought some antibiotic, we could have saved ourselves almost $600, even after all the negotiations. Without negotiations, we'd be paying closer to $1K. Extortion.

The crazy thing is that you need their magic signature to buy medicine. It is a cartel. Did you try any of the natural antibiotics?? There are quite a few to chose from and they work really well and are probably much cheaper too.

We're not fans of antibiotics at all, it's normally a last resort. We make our own colloidal silver and it has worked great for us in the past - we were several hours from home and didn't think to bring it with us. We've added it to our first aid kit if we ever run into this again. We also learned that if we do need emergency care, stay away from the hospital network and look for independent physicians.
