It Is A Crazy World.

Just when I thought I had seen and heard about all the variety of drama my country has to offer, I witnessed yet another terrifying one. On this day, I silently prayed that when I eventually get kids of my own, I should be able to afford a car too. Let me tell you why.

Apart from the fact that taking public transportation can be utterly uncomfortable sometimes, it requires absolute trust in the driver too. You do not know who is driving you, one can not tell the driver's intention and one cannot be too certain that the driver is even certified.

I’ve seen movies where school bus drivers are tipped to kidnap school children. I have also heard of stories where drivers divert into strange roads, kidnapping their adult passengers but all these were just stories. Not until yesterday…

It was the general market day yesterday (general market days are days where people from across the state converge at a particular market on a particular day of the week to buy and sell). And as one would guess, the market is always very crowded on such days making the market experience even more unbearable.

If I ever decide to visit the market on the general market day, I go in the evening. By this time, the population of people would have reduced. However, yesterday on our way back from a medical checkup, my mom suggested that we pop in, buy a few things from the market and pop back out. I agreed.

We parked the car a few metres away from the market and then began our journey by foot. Just like my mom said, we were only buying a few groceries for the house and so we didn't waste so much time.

Forty-five minutes or an hour later, we were done shopping and on our merry way out of the market. We began walking back and just a few metres away from the car we saw a lady running rashly across the busy market road with speeding vehicles. The woman had a baby strapped in front of her and she ran as fast as she possibly could. Partially in tears, she kept yelling “My baby! My baby!”

We walked a little further and my mom took the liberty to ask one of the bystanders, who was cursing, what happened.

“The woman was with two kids and some luggage. She alighted from the tricycle with the strapped on kid and the luggage. Before she could turn around, the driver zoomed off with her other kid.” The bystander narrated. Hence her race across the road.

At that moment I could feel my heart beat faster than normal. All I could think of were the worst case scenarios. What did the driver want to do with the innocent kid? Could it be that he didn't know a kid was in there? Then why zoom off? How would the lady cope without her child? The pain of childbirth is really insane and losing a child to some random driver is never an option for a mother.

All these terrible thoughts kept flooding my mind but then I heard one of the bystanders say

“It’s the general market day today and the driver would certainly be caught in the traffic that the market day brings”. He was right and for once in my life, I was glad that the market was congested. On general market days, cars seem to move slowly due to the crowd and congestion. So how exactly did this driver plan to escape?

This is the reason why I silently said that prayer. Maybe the lady was a single mother or maybe her husband was off to work and she had to go around with the kids since she evidently had no babysitter. Maybe it was her first time taking the kids to the market. Maybe I am wrong and maybe her story had an entirely different plot but it can be really disheartening to see a mother run in tears on a busy road with another baby strapped on her just because a driver decided to check if he was fast and furious on a sunny day.

I didn't stick around to find out how this story ended as I was famished and needed to eat but one thing I know is that if the lady caught up with the driver, then it would have been the worst day of the driver's life; that is if only he survived till the end of the day. Such cases aren’t handled lightly when the culprits are caught.

This brings me to the point where I say that not all public transport drivers are to be trusted as crazy things are indeed happening in the world. This serves as a gentle reminder to exercise caution in all our endeavours.

I know this is serious and all...

But what if the kid kidnapped the driver 😂😂😂

I believe it's common knowledge to not trust drivers anymore in Nigeria.
Terrible experience for the single mother...
I hope she got her kid back😔
