2011 Bordeaux

Hello Hive! Last night I took a sensual trip to the Bordeaux region of France. Folks this is what I love about wine, not only can you time travel, which in itself is really impressive, but you can also travel to parts of the world, and all in the comfort of your home. You see with wine that was made by a winemaker that gives a shit, you are tasting the place of where the grapes was grown. This is what the French call terroir. This is what really got my attention as a cannabis lover. But grapes are a little different. For one the shittier the soil, the better the wine. A well fertilized, and watered grape, is a lazy grape. Since vines are in the ground year after year, you want those roots to dig deep. As they get further, they extract more flavor profiles from the earth. But it isn't just soil that effects the quality of the wine. The weather plays a big role as well. You want the grape to be ripe, not over, nor under. Just perfect, and we all know how hard that can be. So some years there are the right conditions that allows this to happen. Some vineyards are situation in a place that allows the grape to reach perfection, while others are not. This is why the same wine varies from region to region, and vineyard to vineyard.

Bordeaux is considered the greatest wine region in the world. Also home to some of the most expensive wines. But guess what? There is so much great wines to be found here, that are cheap. Most people may never afford to drink a First Growth Bordeaux, but there are so many wines to be found that are great, and easy on the pocket book. The one above that I cracked open last night was 18$, and I loved it! It is a Merlot, and Cabernet blend, as most BDX's are. This one had some bottle age on it, so I made sure to separate the sediment from it, and gave it a good 30 min decant. However it really started to open up after about a hour. As a reminder, always serve red wine at or a little above cellar temperature, which should be 55-60 degrees. Cheers!
