Setting goals and achieving them is one of the most gratifying experiences in life. It instills confidence, happiness, and a sense of purpose. Success is the outcome of a series of events that lead to this state of fulfillment. Although success means different things to different people, there are common practices, such as hard work and persistence, that make it achievable. Nigerian mixed martial artist Israel Adesanya (Izzy) demonstrated this after winning a championship rematch against Brazilian and former champion Alex Pereira earlier this month in Miami, Florida, USA. Izzy's victory and reclaiming of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Middleweight Championship were widely celebrated on social media platforms.

I was unaware of Izzy's championship fight at the time and only found out about it through the flood of tweets about his win on my Twitter feed. The congratulatory messages and well wishes were overwhelming, but I was thrilled to see my fellow Nigerians celebrating Izzy's championship victory with so much happiness, as he made us proud with his achievement.

Although I am not an ardent fan of the UFC mixed martial art sport, I take an interest in fights that involve prominent Nigerian fighters. Recently, I felt upset by the unsuccessful attempts of fellow Nigerian and former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman to reclaim the championship in his division. Usman's unsuccessful championship bid hurt me as I felt bad about how his impressive record in his division was being smeared by his losses, causing me to lose interest in Nigerian fighters in the UFC.

However, Izzy's emergence as the winner of the championship fight he participated in rekindled my interest in the UFC. Izzy had previously lost to Pereira on three occasions, twice in kickboxing fights and once in a UFC championship fight, making the championship fight in Florida, USA, earlier this month the fourth time the two fighters would be going against each other. Alex Pereira was rated as the favourite to win the fight by pundits as he had defeated Izzy three times already. Despite this, Izzy showed resilience and courage on his quest to reclaim the UFC Championship, demonstrating that he and his team had put in a lot of work to prepare for the fight.

Although I did not watch the championship fight between Izzy and Pereira live, I watched highlights of the fight on YouTube, which was both action-packed and entertaining. The events leading to Pereira's knockout by Izzy seemed quite ironic. The first round of the fight was keenly contested by both fighters as they tried to outwit each other. However, Pereira appeared to be in control of the second round as he launched several attacks at Izzy, forcing him to the cage of the octagon (the arena where UFC fights take place) and playing defense. Unknown to Pereira and spectators watching the fight, Izzy was actually strategising during Pereira's attacks and waiting for the right moment to strike! The opportunity presented itself, and Izzy leveraged it to unleash mayhem on Pereira in quick succession. He initially startled Pereira with a powerful right punch, followed up with a second that knocked him down on the canvas before landing the final blow, a hammer punch. Izzy further went on to mimic an archer striking a target by shooting an imaginary arrow at Pereira.

Izzy's victory at the UFC Middleweight championship fight serves as an inspiration to me and many others that success is attainable regardless of the setbacks and failures that have been experienced in the past. Hard work, resilience, and patience are essential qualities individuals must possess to succeed in their chosen careers. Congratulations to Israel Adesanya, also known as Izzy, Stylebender, and the current UFC Middleweight Champion! I wish you more success in your career as you continue to inspire others to strive to improve and unleash their potentials. Thumbs up Champ!
