Hi Everyone,

One thing we wanted to try after visiting the Sumo Wrestling area was chanko nabe, a meal for sumo wrestlers. We have read that sumo wrestler have a different diet and need food with lots of energy so they can compete. We found a restaurant inside Ryogoku Edo Noren called Kirishima which had a very appetising menu. We didn’t book a table and was pretty lucky to get a seat straight away, just before lunchtime.

We ordered a set for the two adults and 2 kids menu for the little ones. The staff advised we would definitely have enough food so we didn’t order any more food. From what we could see from other tables, the servings were pretty big. Like most Japanese restaurants, our kids will get a toy of their choice and that would keep them occupied for the rest of the meal. I love how Japanese people cater to kids so well when we are out, one thing less to worry about when we are at a restaurant.

The food slowly came out. The pot of food came out raw and like the hot pot we have at home, we let it cook on the fire until it is ready. In the meantime, we had the entrees, and that itself was pretty substantial. The kids got their meal also at the same time which came with a drink and dessert. Not bad for the price we paid. BB E wasn’t very hungry that morning because he had a big breakfast so a kid's meal was enough, normally he would order an adult meal.

The chanko nabe is finally ready. It has a combination of various vegetables, tofu, chicken, prawns, pork balls etc and then some udon in the end to finish off with the soup. We were definitely full after eating the full pot of food and no wonder the sumos need the variety in one pot. I am sure the serving we received was much less than what a sumo would normally eat but even that we were very stuffed. It was such a delicious hearty meal, we loved it and were glad to try it out.
