Aging Man

I'm tired of just showing coins. It needs a story. I can think of... The transformation of the monarch shown on the coin. Aging. Francis Joseph I reigned longest in my country (*, 1830, He ruled 1848-1916).

24 years. He's almost a boy.

29 years. This time he is a grown man. He is married. He has three children. His eldest daughter died of typhus. He failed as a warlord. He lost the war in Italy where he tried to personally command his armies.

48 years. An experienced man in his prime. His hair is falling, wrinkles are increasing. The emperor accepted the constitution. He is no longer an absolute monarch. He lost another war, lost another territory. He rules, he rules.

70 years. The Emperor's only son committed suicide. His wife was murdered by an Italian anarchist. The emperor's younger brother was executed in Mexico.

The Emperor is extremely conservative. Refuses to use running water and flush toilets. He is also conservative in politics.

77 years. The emperor has ruled for 60 years. Mainly he wants to avoid war...

The emperor will rule for another 8 years. But the image on the coins will not change anymore. And the emperor could not prevent the war. Two years after his death, his empire collapses and crumbles.

The world changed in his lifetime. At the beginning of his reign not a mile of railway had been built in his country. At the end of his life he could fly in a plane, sink in a submarine if he wanted to.

Medicine... Bacteria, asepsis and antisepsis, syringe, narcosis, X-ray were discovered during his lifetime. Medicine ceased to be an art and became a science. Sorry. I am a historian by training. Back to coins.

I introduced these relatives:

  1. 20 Kreutzer, 1854, diameter 22 mm, 4,32g, 900/1000 purity
  2. 2 Guldens, 1859, diameter 36 mm, 900/1000 purity
  3. 1 gulden, 1878, diameter 29 mm, 900/1000 purity
  4. 5 Krones, 1900, diameter 36 mm, 900/1000 purity
  5. Jubileum 5 Krones, diameter 36 mm, 900/1000 purity

    Reverses of coins.

I can think of several similar topics. But my problem is time. And the quality of the photos.

Thank you for reading.

If I were him I might have insisted they keep my youthful look on all the coins! I wouldn't want to look at the coins and say, "Damn I'm old"! Great post and great coins!

Thank you for the compliment. In the time of this Emperor old age was still unusual. On average, people did not even live to be 50 years old. The octogenarian was awe-inspiring.
