Finding Your Formula

Justin Timberlake has been around for some time.
He was relevant when I was first moving into the United States in the late 90s.

During that time, it was all about Backstreet Boys vs. Nsync.
Who was better?

As I got older, that debate seemed ridiculous.
Now it was, Usher or Justin Timberlake..
Who was better?

This was the era where Usher had smash hits back to back to back.
The answer seemed obvious.
Of course, it had to be Usher.

And Usher would occasionally throw jabs at Justin to showcase that this should not have even been a competition.

But as years have passed on by, it seems like Justin has still been consistent.
Not saying Usher isn't. Just haven't heard from him in a while.

When Justin was asked what allowed him to stay relevant for so long, he said:
"I found my formula & stuck with it."

Justin has stuck by the same record producers, beatmakers & writers that he had for many years.
He found something that works for him & keeps finetuning that.

This reminded me of Gall's Law.
Gall's law is when you cannot build a complex system from scratch.

Instead, it's all about getting something up & working...
THEN add onto that.

Justin's career seems to be an embodiment of Gall's Law.
He worked on his music career.
Then afterwards, he added on other vehicles like acting.

Finding our formula is a unique process.
But it gives a sense of identity.

Justin Timberlake works with other people.
But he's been hesitant with working with just any new producer, beatmaker & writer. No matter how trendy they are.

This is a paradigm that works well in the world of communication.

Oftentimes, we are thinking about what we lack & jump immediately into fixing that.
On the flipside, how about we ask:
what am i pretty good at?

If we can double down on what we are good at, then we have more confidence to tackle our flaws.
And sometimes, what we are good at becomes so good, that our flaws becomes irrelevant.

So that's step 1 into finding your formula.
Just ask yourself, what is it that I am good at?

Step 2 is to remember Gall's law.
You can't build a complex system from scratch.
A complex system is built in an interactive way, via simplicity first.

Imagine if the first ever phone to be created was an iPhone...
Lol good luck.
The iPhone was something that was worked up to.

The whole notion of an inventor in a lab creating something completely from scratch is predominantly a myth.
Everything that we know nowadays was born through trial and error.

Step 3 is to approach your flaws once you built confidence from your strengths.

These 3 steps are a great way to finding a formula in this noisy world.

It's what allowed Justin Timberlake to be relevant for a couple of decades now.
Let's see how long he can keep the momentum going.
