Il tempio nascosto di Valadier nelle Marche - The hidden temple of Valadier in the Marche ITA/ENG

(Edited)

Cercatele!

ENG VERSION

This summer I wanted to stay in Italy and I wanted to visit one of the many attractions that the Marche can offer.
Located a stone's throw from Genga at about 580 meters (another small town that I recommend) I discovered a very unique hermitage, the temple of Valadier secretly nestled inside the mountain since 1858 on the orders of Pope Leone XXII.

8.jpg

The road to get there is also particular and a bit demanding, on one side of the mountain inside the Frasassi gorges begins a steep climb, called "the ascent of the breath", almost 800 meters long, especially in the middle of summer. it becomes difficult enough to make the company rewarding as well as unique.

13.jpg

Walking along the small road you find yourself completely immersed in greenery, for a part of the journey you can enjoy the shade of the lush trees (despite the heat) that surround the journey, but once the view opens onto the majesty of the gorges of Frasassi, not even the burning sun becomes a problem.

1.jpg

The entire area of the gorges is full of life and spectacular views, the Frasassi Caves are no less in this area but I will talk about them later in another post.

At the end of the climb there is a spectacle worthy of the best Indiana Jones, an immense cave more than 60 meters high with the Temple inside, an object of religious worship in the past being completely isolated and more "close" to the sky.

2.jpg

3.jpg

4.jpg

The white color of the travertine with which it is built appears even brighter to everyone's eyes in contrast with the cave, and the black lead dome communicates a great grandeur, it almost seems to support the entire mountain and the statue of the Virgin and Child in white Carrara marble by Antonio Canova intact, perfect, located on the altar inside the temple, is a precious work that the inaccessible place transforms almost into a small miracle.

10.jpg

For centuries this mysterious place was used by the local population as a refuge from looting, and then became a real place of worship and prayer.
Today, however, it remains a very suggestive destination, so much so that the locals are encouraged to organize a living nativity scene, located behind the temple, during the Christmas holidays.

6.jpg

9.jpg

Beyond this expanse of stacked rocks begins a long tunnel inside the mountain, completely devoid of light and getting colder for every meter traveled. Personally I walked for a while but being very dangerous I went back, I saw many other people even families with small children continue going much deeper, illuminated only by the light of the cell phone and it was a bit scary since the the whole area is not provided with any control or security.

11.jpg

12.jpg

In conclusion I can only recommend a holiday in the Marche, this is just one of the beautiful natural and non-natural attractions that I had the honor of visiting.
Valadier's time remains one of the most particular works of art I have seen in my life and everyone should see it at least once in their life.
The Marches hide many dream places and it is only up to us to decide to visit them, equip yourself with good shoes and start walking, the hidden wonders are all around us.

find them!

Luogo splendido!
