Is there a reason why Africans don’t excel in competitive swimming?

Yes, there is. I know I may get some flack for this, but if you read to the end, it evens out. This is not a racist statement, but one based on science. And, BTW not notoriously bad, just not quite as good. if you take a Caucasian and a person of African descent, of the same height, weight, and build, the caucasin will have a higher percentage of body fat (evolution, based on coming from colder climates). More fat means they float better, and thus, ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL, they will swim a little better, because a person of African descent will expend more energy just to stay afloat, leaving less energy for moving forward. The anatomy of none blacks tend to have proportionally bigger trunk and shorter legs which provide more efficient flow on water.

At the same time, because again, ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL, people of African descent will typically be better runners. Typically. they have longer feet and longer lower legs, which gives them more leverage, more push against the ground, for the same energy expended.
