โWhatโs Bugging You?โ๐ณ
โSilvertop I want to weed whack every one of these stinging nettle plants to the ground!โ๐ค
Liz definitely has a problem with these plants Lol!๐
Silvertop does as well Lol!๐
If you accidentally walk-through, touch, or even just lightly brush up against one of these plants your skin will burn for hours!๐ฌ
โGROK/ARAโฆ.. can you tell me why this plant causes your skin to burn if touched?โ
โSilvertopโฆโฆTiny hollow hairs called trichomes. They act like little hypodermic needlesโtheir silica tips snap off on contact, piercing your skin and injecting a mix of chemicals!โ
OUCHโฆโฆโฆ!๐
Years ago Silvertop was completely unaware of this potentially painful plant.
I fired up our gasoline weedeater and began to clear part of our yard that borders our woods โฆโฆ. the perfect location for stinging nettle!
Wearing only a T-shirt in the heat of the day, small pieces greenery covered my forearms!
Suddenly the burning started, and then BLISTERS started forming on my skin!๐ฌ
The sad part is I didnโt even have a clue what was happening!๐ฌ
With Summer almost here, and everything greening up, Nettles are already three feet tall, and they will continue growing quickly, soon doubling in size!
My friend David that lives in the tiny house, routinely makes tea from stinging nettles.๐ฎ
โSilvertop you just need to be careful and donโt drink too much of Nettle tea!โ๐
โNot a problem my friend, I will stick to my Latteโs! If you need any more Nettles for your tea, come down to our backyard and help yourself!โโบ๏ธ
โLizโฆโฆ David wants ALL of our stinging nettles Lol!โ๐
Be careful out in the forest my friendsโฆโฆ
You might run into a Cougar, or Bear, or the most dangerous thing in the forest this Summer โฆ.Stinging Nettles!๐ฌ๐ณ
Till tomorrow Silvertop Mike ๐

David knows! Stinging nettles are potent medicinals, and they're also quite nutrient dense! Here on the Big Island, we have an endemic (found only in Hawai'i) relative of stinging nettle, mamaki, which is basically an arborescent (tree-like), thankfully-spineless, stinging nettle, that is revered by Hawaiians. I've used it many times in my own tea blends, and it's wonderful! ๐๐๐โจ๐ค
Does it sting like traditional nettle plants?๐ณ
I hope you wore gloves, my friend!๐
No, not at all, it's completely spineless and harmless, and also quite lovely! ๐๐๐โจ๐ค
That sounds so much easier to deal with then what we have up here๐โบ๏ธ๐
Well, yes, they're a bit more gentle on the skin, that's for sure! ๐๐๐โจ๐ค
Gentlerโฆโฆ.and sounds like it has health benefits as well, my friend!!๐๐
Indeed, very much so, it is extremely beneficial for the body! It makes vitality flow! ๐๐๐โจ๐ค
That sounds wonderful, my friend, good health to you!๐๐ค๐
It is, and thanks muchly, my friend, to you as well! ๐๐๐โจ๐ค
๐๐ค๐..............
It would be a bummer indeed to find a flower that is so beautiful, but is spiny and/or allergenic. ๐น๐คฏ๐
!ALIVE
Well, mamaki is more of a medicinal plant than a 'flower', and I have no allergies of any kind. I'm not crazy about plants with thorns, but I deal with it. ๐๐๐โจ๐ค
!ALIVE
Beautiful flowers with thorns can simply be trimmed in such a way that the thorns will be gone; in case of common allergens, they can simply be treated with a (hopefully safe enough) substance to neutralize those allergens. ๐น๐ค

!PIZZA
That's feasible sometimes, and other times not so much. Also pharmaceutical chemicals are not the way to heal anything. ๐๐๐โจ๐ค

I was thinking about some natural and safe substance applied directly to plants (including flowers) with common allergens to neutralize those allergens. ๐คฏ I wonder if that exists though !INDEED. ๐คฏ๐

People that have allergies to pollen are not allergic to the pollen of most flowering plants, because there's not means of transmission, since plants with actual flowers are pollinated by various pollinating animals. The ones with which most people have challenges are the plants that are wind pollinated, with their pollen wafting in the wind everywhere. There are also ways to heal the immune system, so that it stops reacting violently to common, natural plant materials. ๐๐๐โจ๐ค

I am in the process of trying to tame an area of nettles like that @silvertop. It's a hidden spot in the garden where grass clippings etc have been thrown for about 40 years!so the soil there is crazy high in nitrogen, and nettles thrive there.Did you know if you chop down nettles and put them in a bucket of water and leave for 2-3 weeks, then strainthe resulting STINKY liquid, you have a super liquid feed for plants. Its especially good for anything that wants a lot of nitrogen, such as leafy greens, or also for tomatoes early in the season, before they start to flower.
!lolz
Very good to know my friend, sounds like a very good way to add nitrogen to garden soils!๐
I will try that, with gloves, of course!๐
Definitely with gloves ๐
Also, if any of the stinky liquid spills on your clothes, they're done for, that smell will never come out ๐คข

Wow you're skin is a lot more reactive than mine. Or those nettles are worse than the ones that I have encountered throughout my life. It does sting a little, bit I rarely get anything worse than an itch for 20min tops. When Lily runs into them, I always put mint oil on the spot. That cools and smells good and makes her forget about the sting.
I think the problem was that the weed eater liquefied the juices!๐
I learned to never do that again Lol!๐
