El premio Alfaguara de Novela es un premio que da el Grupo Santillana para premiar a una novela de lengua castellana. Recuerdo leer algunos de ellos, que me gustaron bastante, como Abril Rojo de Santiago Roncagliolo o Delirio de Laura Restrepo. Hace poco el premio lo ganó el título que reseño hoy, del autor peruano Gustavo Rodriguez.
The Alfaguara Novel Prize is an award given by Grupo Santillana to a Spanish-language novel. I remember reading some of them, which I liked a lot, such as Abril Rojo by Santiago Roncagliolo or Delirio by Laura Restrepo. The title I am reviewing today, by Peruvian author Gustavo Rodriguez, recently won the award.
Sinopsis: En una Lima actual, nos encontramos con Eufrasia Vela, una cuidadora de ancianos. Ella irá conociendo a diversas personas de edades tardías, como doña Carmen, el doctor Harrison y “Los Siete Magníficos”. Es en el proceso de cuidarlos, que se verá ante la solicitud de apresurar el fin de sus vidas.
Synopsis: In a modern Lima, we meet Eufrasia Vela, a caregiver for the elderly. She will get to know various elderly people, such as Doña Carmen, Dr. Harrison and "The Magnificent Seven". It is in the process of caring for them that she will be faced with the request to hasten the end of their lives.
Es una novela que muestra el pensar y sentir de muchos ancianos en sus últimos años de vida, cuando las fuerzas ya no dan para realizar mucha vida social y gran parte de sus conocidos los ha ido olvidando. A su vez, se recordarán épocas mejores y de qué decisiones se arrepienten. Por otro lado, surge el tema de la eutanasia como una solución para los pesares de los últimos años de vida.
It is a novel that shows the thoughts and feelings of many elderly people in their last years of life, when they no longer have the strength to carry out much social life and most of their acquaintances have forgotten them. At the same time, they will remember better times and what decisions they regret. On the other hand, the subject of euthanasia arises as a solution to the sorrows of the last years of life.
Si bien la protagonista tiene su propia historia, siento que no acaba siendo el foco y más se muestra lo que pasa con los personajes a su cuidado. Tiene toques de comedia, pero es drama principalmente. También hay un poco de temas actuales, sobre cómo se manejan las noticias ahora, las tendencias, etc.
While the protagonist has her own story, I feel she doesn't end up being the focus and more of what happens to the characters in her care is shown. It has touches of comedy, but is mostly drama. There's also a bit of current issues, about how the news is handled now, trends, etc.
El título puede hacerte una idea que habrá cuyes en la historia, pero es más para dar una idea. Creo que la parte final pudo ser mejor contada, ya que se llena de ideas que no se relacionan mucho con el resto de la novela. Y quizás unos personajes y dinámicas más para evitar las redundancias.
The title might give you an idea that there will be guinea pigs in the story, but it's more to give you an idea. I think the final part could have been better told, as it is filled with ideas that don't relate much to the rest of the novel. And maybe a few more characters and dynamics to avoid redundancies.
En general, es una novela sencilla, pero que nos permite pensar sobre esas últimas etapas de la vida. Intentaré leer más libros del autor.
Overall, it is a simple novel, but one that allows us to think about those last stages of life. I will try to read more books by the author.
