When the white men brought Religion to the people of Umu-Ata village, they had no idea that if only they had been a few days early, then they probably would have prevented a huge tragedy from happening.

Before the white men arrived, the people of Umu-Ata worshiped the river goddess, a goddess they believed to be more powerful than any of the gods of the neighboring village. People in the past who have undermined the powers of the river goddess have all regretted it, some of them didn’t even live to tell the story, the last person being the wife of Nnadi.

Nnadi was a poor village farmer with a newly married bride. He had decided to go to the city to go search for greener pastures in other to be able to take good care of his wife and the many children they plan on giving birth to.

For six months, Nnadi hustled in the city but things didn’t looked like they were going to change anytime soon and Nnadi was beginning to miss his wife, so he traveled back home unannounced. When he arrived, he had this feeling that something wasn’t right with his wife, he didn’t know what it was but he could feel it in his guts, so he did the only thing he knew he could do to clear whatever doubts that was building up in his mind, he took his wife to the umu-ata river for her to swear that she had been faithful to him while he was away.

Nnadi had agreed to swear himself that he too had been faithful. After they both swore, they were both asked to walk into the river until it covered both of them and then both of their names were called and asked to come out, but only Nnadi walked out which meant only one thing, his wife had been unfaithful and the river goddess had done justice to her.
