The Groundnut Seller

Earlier this evening, I was seated out when I saw a lady who sells groundnut on her wheelbarrow heading back home. As I watched her slowly push that wheelbarrow, I couldn't help but ask myself one question. “How is she ever going to make it in life doing this?”

When I look at people who menial jobs just to put food on their table, I always find myself asking this question because if you really look at it, their kind of job is one where the income they make doesn't really change much. So it's not like they're working, hoping for a day when the price of groundnut would go up (like crypto) and they will sell at a higher price, take profit and get rich.

No, it's never like that. Instead, every day that lady she pushes that barrow, she probably already knows how much she would make, how much her profit would be, etc. I mean, I can't believe I'm saying this because it seems to me that even a gambler has more possibility of getting rich and making it in life compared to her.

Because while a gambler might often lose, there's a huge possibility that one day could be his day when he could win big and be set for life, unlike the groundnut seller where even her best day could be her selling off all of her groundnut, and yet that wouldn't take her anywhere.

Now I'm not trying to encourage gambling or discourage anyone from pursuing that legit hustle, but all I'm saying is that there's more to life than just trying to put food on your table and sometimes, when I see the jobs some people do, I wonder what keeps them going. If it's hope for their business to slowly grow, or they're just trying to survive while praying for a miracle to locate them.
