Back in the old days, a man's word was his bond. Once a man promises to do something, he always made sure to see it till the end or even die trying, unlike nowadays where promises are being thrown here and there with no one giving a damn if they fulfill it or not.

It's almost like from the time of our fathers to now, the word has lost its value and no longer means anything to anyone anymore and that is why when people make promises to us this days, we don't put our hopes on it because like the saying goes, people will disappoint you.

When I was writing exams in other to get admitted into the university, my dad had called me one day and asked if I maybe wanted to wait one extra year before applying because according to him, my eldest brother had just one more year in school and my dad didn't want both of us in the university at the same time because of the expenses.

It was a valid reason and truth be told, my old man was only being polite saying that to me as a question because if he really didn't want me to go to school that year, he just simply would have said so and that would have been it. There was nothing I could have done because I wasn't going to pay my fees myself.

But that day, I had told my dad that I wanted to go to school, that by God's grace I also might get a job and be able to lessen the expenses on him. I had said those as mere words and not as a promise and it was more of me trying to convince my dad to let me apply for school that me actually meaning the words I was saying and somehow it worked, because my dad agreed and I got the admission.

My first year in school had been hell. Hunger dealt with me even though my dad did all he could. I couldn't complain though because I saw some people who had it worse than me and they were pushing through so why shouldn't I?

Anyways fast forward to the covid time when the whole world went on lock down, that was when those mere words that I had simply spoken those many months ago began to manifest and before I knew it, I suddenly was able to take care of myself and take away some of those expenses from my dad.

If there's one thing I'm proud of, it's definitely that because I said those words and I've been keeping to it for a while now.
