Money Talks
Money rules the world, it always has and probably always will, but sometimes, when you really sit down to think about it, it's crazy how deep this mentality of money being the ultimate answer to everything goes, especially in a place like this where the poorest of the poor live.
At my hostel, we have rules and penalties for almost any and every scenerio possible. These rules took years of personal experiences from different people who have lived here to put together, but if there's one thing all of these different rules has in common, it is money.
It is almost as if the rules were created to extort money from the other occupants of the hostel, and I say that because all penalties in the rules has to do with cash. And I guess that's fine, the people who put the rules together probably figured that taking money from these people would make them straighten up because no one wants to lose money.
But my question is, what if someone has more than enough money to give and keeps on breaking the rules on purpose because he or she knows they can pay for it, should the management keep on ignoring these things simply because that person can pay?
I ask that because looking at the situation, that almost makes that person a god in that environment, because they know they can get away with almost everything they do because they have the money to pay their way out of it.. But is that right?
Shouldn't there be some sort of physical punishment like probably reporting them to the local vigilante group in the area and getting them locked up maybe for a day or two when they commit offences that could be seen as a form of criminal offence, one of it being jumping the hostel fence just because you purposely stayed out late and got yourself locked out.
The crazy thing though, now that I think about it is that even if they get reported to these guys, at the end of the day, you will be brought back home after you've paid some money and promise not to do it again.. So the circle just keeps going on and on.
I guess at the end of the day, money truly is king, especially in a shitty place like this where all everyone is concerned about is how to get their next meal, even if that involves turning a blind eye to the truth.
