Honesty
We all know being honest is a good thing but sometimes it could end up putting us in trouble and that is why some people twist the truth every once in a while, not because they enjoy lying but because they’re trying to avoid getting into trouble.
A couple of weeks ago, something had happened that ended up ruining two people’s friendship. One of my neighbors had borrowed an electric kettle from his friend (another neighbor of ours). After making use of it, the guy had returned the kettle to her only for her to find out much later when she was about to make use of it that it was no longer working. She had furiously marched down to his doorstep to know why her electric kettle was no longer coming on and the guy had explained to her that he had spoilt it by mistake and didn’t know how to tell her so he had chosen instead to just return it and pretend like nothing happened, a very dumb move.
The lady had been more furious at the fact that someone she calls her friend would do something like that and try to hide it instead of just being honest that she had immediately asked him to pay her for the kettle which he did, but immediately he transferred the money to her, they both stopped talking to each other till date.
You may be wondering why I’m saying all of this, well that is because something similar to that happened to me today.
A friend of mine who was among those evicted from my hostel (read my last post for better understanding) was moving out today and had given me one of her light bulbs to keep in my room for her (she vowed to take everything she owned from the house lol). I had told her I was going to make use of the bulb for the time being and she had agreed, she had even assisted me in fixing the bulb in my room. But about five minutes after she left, it started bringing out smoke and suddenly stopped working.
I had thought about what to do. “Should I just pretend like nothing happened and wait until the day she wants it back and tell her I had no idea how it got burnt?” I had asked myself. But the moment I remembered what happened those couple of weeks ago, I had immediately gone outside and told her the truth.
She had followed me back to see for herself and when she saw the bulb, she felt so bad that she had offered to get another bulb for me because she knew I really needed that bulb(I had earlier told her I had made plans of getting one later today). It’s a funny story and I sure didn’t know if she was going to be pissed or not, I’m just so happy I said the truth.
