Does the truth always set us free?

Back in the day when myself and my brothers still were kids at home, my dad would always do this thing where he tried to always let us go whenever we did something we weren't suppose to, as long as we came clean and told him the truth about everything before he finds out himself.. So it was kinda like us snitching on each other.

It didn't seem like a big deal back then until we began to grow up and soon found out that not all truths really set us free. Because there were days where we still ended up getting punished even after snitching on ourselves, it all just depended on how huge the offence was. Now I'm not saying that we have to lie to get things done all the time, I'm just saying that as humans, we're bound to make mistakes and tell some lies every now and then. It's almost like a natural thing that has to happen.

Unfortunately, not everyone knows this as a male friend of might is currently having issues with his relationship because of a similar issue. Now aside from the fact that he cheated, that isn't really what's more upsetting according to his girlfriend, she said nothing makes her feel more sad than when she remembers the lies.

According to her, everything would have felt a lot easier to handle if he had walked up to her and opened up about his affairs with the other ladies. Of course I felt she was finally losing it and was going crazy but surprisingly, she was serious about the whole thing. Apparently cheating is easier to endure when your partner tells you the truth about his "side piece" compared to when he or she lies about it and pretends like they don't have anyone on the side.

Anyways, the whole experience felt like a crazy one to me because to be honest, I understand why people would want to lie about things like that to you or anyone, what I actually don't understand is why anyone would want to open up about their affairs to you especially when they plan on ending the whole thing with the side piece.

I'm all for honesty and all that but sometimes, I feel like there is something known as too much truth, which is a situation where you tell people the truth about certain things they just have no business knowing.

But then again, I know some people prefer to open up to their partners and just be an open book to them, which is fine. To each is own, we all should do what works for us but should also have it in mind that not all truths set us free.

I shall response to your question yes. Truth sets us free in many things. In relationship, if any partner tells lie then it is trust that is broken. When someone breaks your trust then his or her lies or truths can't matter for us. First time, you speak truth to your dad that looked safe for you. Whenever you get punishment, it is essential to stop you from doing same mistake again. In University, a lot of couples have more than one partner but they speak a popular lie, "We are with you babe only, we can't live without you blah blah".

Well you're right.. It's always the right thing to do when you speak the truth, but it's not always the safest.

Simi's song "smile for me" comes to mind. The part she sang "lie to me, if the truth will break my heart o"
I think the truth sets us free but in various dimensions because freedom is a multidimensional entity. It could be physically, emotionally, psychologically or otherwise.

In case of relationship I think saying truth is necessary otherwise anytime a single lie maybe enough to end a relationship. And I believe that when a relationship build on lie or hiding truth can't sustain for long time.

You should always tell the truth in a relationship. In the beginning, there is definitely a little problem, but then the relationship becomes much stronger and you fall in love with each other, so I try to do the same. I do not lie at all in such relationships.
