Bunmi (a short story)

There's a saying in Africa that you have to fight with your friend before the both of you can become best of friends; however, what that saying didn't tell us was how many times you had to fight.

Tunde was getting tired of this whole pointless arguments he was having with Bunmi.

“How did things get this wrong, what happened?” Tunde had asked himself this questions and more and he had always arrived at the same answer, Nothing.

Bunmi used to be his friend, one could even say that they were more than friends, they were best friends who told each other things. But Bunmi had woken up one morning and had refused to say a word to Tunde.

At first Tunde had thought it was one of her usual mood swings but after he got snubbed by her at the village river where they all usually go to take their baths, Tunde realized that it just wasn't a mood swing, Bunmi was mad at him but why?

This wasn't the first time they were both having differences but whenever something like that came up, Tunde always made sure to give her some time to cool off before approaching her to settle whatever it was that was causing the beef between them but today wasn't going to be like those days, he was going to confront her now and know what her problem with him was.

So Tunde approached her right before she went into the river.

“Bunmi.. What's the problem? What's wrong?”

“You better get your filthy hands off me” Bunmi yelled at Tunde, drawing the attention of others at the river towards them before yanking his hand off hers and dived into the river.

“O boy what happened over there?” Mustapha, Tunde's friend asked on their way home from the river.

“I honestly don't know. I mean she just woke up this morning and started acting up.”

“You're sure you didn't do anything to her because the way she reacted at the river was so unlike her.”

“I didn't, as a matter of fact we were together last night having a conversation before...”

“Before what?” Mustapha asked, noticing how his friend suddenly stopped talking.

“..before she suddenly got up and said that she wanted to go to her hut.”

“What were the two of you talking about?”

“Well I was telling her about this new lady that I liked.”

Mustapha sighed. “Now I know what this is all about.”

“What?”

“My friend, what's the relationship between you and Bunmi?” Mustapha asked, they were now at Tunde's little hut.

“Relationship? Bunmi is my best friend, she's like a sister to me.”

“Well, then I think an incest may be happening soon.” Mustapha said and quickly went his way.

It took a while before Tunde understood what Mustapha was saying..

“Jesus christ!!” he exclaimed.

“No no no no no no... There was no way Bunmi was inlove with him.”
