Saudi football madness, sportswashing, or is it more than that?

Star parade

Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Roberto Firmino, N'golo Kanté, Jordan Henderson and many more have decided to take the offers from various clubs from the Saudi football league. Of course for immense bags of money. And there are definitely more to come. Who knows Kylian Mbappé will fall for the on billion dollar deal he was offered. And Romelu Lukaku was also approached by one of the Saudi clubs... With this kind of firing power, when it comes to money, anything is possible.

This means, that next season we will see a complete star parade playing on the Saudi Arabian fields. You could call it a "Premier League of the Middle East".

Sportswashing or is it more than that?

Sportswashing is a term that was invented for dubious money that is invested in sports club to make the money clean. It is not something new, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and lately Newcastle United all got taken over by investment groups from the Middle East. The immense amounts of money they pump into the clubs is for sure to be called "dubious". And so it is with the money that gets used now to buy players from all over Europe. Huge sums are spent, and the origin of it is somewhat unclear. So you can call that sportswashing. But there is more going on.

Saudi Arabia wants to be ready for a world in which demand for oil is falling. So they are now investing in other parts of the economy, to create a returning form of revenue. This money goes into infrastructure, culture, sports, entertainment, etc... And it should pay itself of in the future.

Look at Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, they have converted their country and cities into attractive tourist havens. And that is exactly what the Saudi's are now doing. They are making their country "sexy" for the rest of the world. And obviously that may cost a few billion dollars.

The big question is, will their plan work? Will people really be interested in watching the Saudi league?

Sincerely,

Pele23

It is a fact that the way we know that Saudi Arabia is a very rich country and those who run it are very wise. Go to the other place the way they are now coming to football.

Over time people could be more interested in watching the Saudi League but I don't think it will ever come near the Premier League in terms of viewership and popularity. The Saudis have lately been investing huge sums of money in different kinds of ventures, now I have an inkling of why they're doing that :)
