Millionaires and economics sign petition to tax the rich more...

Blablabla

I read it last night on X, and today it was in the newspaper too here in Belgium. 300 millionaires and economics professors signed a petition to tax the whole patrimomium of the rich yearly. This, according to them, to finally redistribute the wealth, and to counteract the rise of uprising in the West and all over the world.

My first reaction to this was, "blablabla", they can say what they want, because eventually they will still hide their money and assets in dubious places like Switzerland, Cayman Islands, Panama, etc...
But, my curious mind decided to take a look at the list of who signed. And there I find Thomas Piketty, an economics professor who became very rich by writing a book about "Capital of the 21st century". And I read the book, damn that was some really boring stuff, he does stride for more equality in taxation in his book.
Then we find, little old Bernie, Bernie Sanders, the "socialist" of the Democratic party in the United States. Who lost to Hilary Clinton for the Democratic nomination in 2015. He is know as a person that wants to redistribute the wealth of the world. So that is no surprise.

"Wealth" washing?

But among the names are some surprising names, like Republican Brendan Boyle, and Abigail Disney, heir to the Disney empire. A multinational like there are very little in the world.

Is this a form of "wealth" washing, like we have greenwashing and sports washing that is been done by dubious firms all over the world? Or is it a true act of dignity and enlightenment? I fear we will never know, as 300 of them is just too little to make a change. They will drop their petition at the G20 summit in New Delhi on 9 and 10 September. But as usual, this will be accepted with promising words by the world leaders, but eventually nothing will come from it. Because, one does not bite the hand that feeds him...

Sincerely,

It's mostly a sham, this doesn't solve any problem from a fundamental level. Taxing the rich more when they're many loopholes in the system will be an interesting sport :)
