Black Friday frenzy in Belgium

Marketing

Up until ten years ago nobody in Belgium had ever heard of Black Friday. We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving neither, so Black Friday was something purely American. But somehow some retailers decided to make it a thing over here too. Without the Thanksgiving then.

Since then, the phenomenon has grown exponentially and this year we are hearing Black Friday commercials for the entire month of November. It is insane, and most of the deals are fake deals with fake discounts but the marketing works like a charm! Last year there were 700000 extra websales in Belgium, on the Friday itself. This year we can expect over a million in extra purchases online.

That is just crazy for something that didn’t exist 10 years ago, and is actually just a marketing scheme. It just shows how manipulated people get, when you show them a discount…

I don’t get it, I am quite immune to it, but shop away all you want, I don’t mind!

Sincerely,

Pele23

Absolutely nuts. Originally came about from retailers moving stock that was sitting so they could free up space for the Christmas inventory that was arriving the following week. Clearing out the old range for the new with most retailers making profit even if they sold at cost due to rebates. This is like having a double Christmas.

Indeed, I am no fan, but the marketing clearly works
