Hello everyone

Today I bring another jewel of 80's music, it is the first album by the British Reggae group UB40, a wonder for the ears with a unique sound, one of those records that you can always listen to without getting tired of them, also, largely due to the soft and relaxed style of "reggae".

I have always liked bands or musicians who, in addition to making unforgettable songs, carry some claim, protest and/or social denunciation. This is the case of UB40 and above all in this album it is reflected from beginning to end, one only has to see that the name of the group responds to the name of the form to request unemployment benefit "Unemployment Benefit -Form 40-" and also in this LP used the form itself to create the cover, in the photos you can see it in more detail.

We cannot forget that when this album came out in the United Kingdom it was the time of "Margaret Thacher" and the issue of unemployment, racism and social protests were the order of the day, in reality, as today, essentially nothing has changed much since the times of Julius Caesar 😜.

Where did I get this relic? The answer to that question is simple and complex at the same time, but we will reveal it as this, like many other vinyls that I have in the collection, share their origin. I'll start by saying how I met UB40, I already spoke in a previous installment of "My Vinyl Collection" about my devotion to reggae that I suckled from when I was little influenced by one of my older brothers.

In the mid 80's he worked in a bar in Madrid in a "night life" area and bars, at that time it was usual, instead of hiring a DJ every night, to record some of the sessions on a cassette tape, in the bars There used to be dozens of those and my brother would bring them in the car to listen to on the way home. That's how they fell into my hands, I was barely 13 years old and I didn't go to bars as is logical.

One of those tapes had the theme Madam Medusa, included in this album, I liked it very much, it will be the one that I leave below as a favorite track.

Years later I found this record among many others in the collection of a guy who let me choose several to play in a bar that I ran myself, it was already in 1992. The story is somewhat more complex, but since there are several records that have I will tell you more about the same origin and why they are still in my hands today. This is how today, 31 years later, I can show you this collector's item.

Hola a todos

Hoy traigo otra joya de la música de los 80, se trata del primer álbum del grupo de Reggae británico UB40, una maravilla para los oidos con un sonido único, de esos discos que podrás escuchar siempre sin cansarte de ellos, también, en buena parte por el estilo suave y relajado del "reggae".

Siempre me han gustado las bandas o músicos que además de hacer canciones inolvidables llevan algo de carga reivindicativa, protesta y/o denuncia social. Es el caso de UB40 y sobre todo en este álbum queda plasmado de principio a fin, no hay más que ver que el nombre del grupo responde al nombre del formulario para solicitar en subsidio de desempleo "Unemployment Benefit -Form 40-" y además en este LP usaron el propio formulario para crear la portada, en las fotos podéis verlo con más detalle.

No podemos olvidar que cuando salió este disco en Reino Unido eran los tiempos de "Margaret Thacher" y el tema del desempleo, racismo y protestas sociales estaban a la orden del día, en realidad, como hoy, en esencia nada ha cambiado demasiado desde los tiempos de Julio César 😜.

¿De dónde saqué esta reliquia? La respuesta a esa pregunta es sencilla y compleja al mismo tiempo, pero ya lo iremos desvelando ya que este como otros muchos vinilos que tengo en la colección comparten procedencia. Empezaré diciendo como conocí a UB40, ya hablé en una entrega anterior de "Mi Colección de Vinilos" de mi devoción por el reggae que mamé desde pequeño influenciado por unos de mis hermanos mayores.

A mediados de los 80 él trabajaba en un bar de Madrid de una zona de "marcha" y bares, en esa época era habitual, en vez contratar un DJ cada noche, grabar alguna de las sesiones en una cinta de cassete, en los bares solia haber decenas de esas y mi hermano se las traía en el coche para escucharlas de vuelta a casa. Así caían en mis manos, yo apenas tenía 13 años y no pisaba los bares como es lógico.

Una de esas cintas traía el tema Madam Medusa, incluido en este álbum, me gustó muschísimo, será el que os deje más abajo como tema favorito.

Pasados los años encontré este disco entre otros muchos en la colección de un tipo que me dejó elegir varios para poner en un bar que yo mismo regentaba, ya era el año 1992. La historia es algo más compleja, pero como hay varios discos que tienen la misma procedencia ya os iré contando más cosas de por qué siguen a día de hoy en mis manos. Así es como hoy, 31 años después, os puedo enseñar esta pieza de colección.

Billy Korg a.k.a. NuPulse, Electronic Music Producer bred in the Spanish "Raver scene" with the SensinGiJs (SensinDJ + Billy Korg), making live acts just using Roland and Korg hardware.
