ENGLISH 🇬🇧

Hello everyone

Today we are going to remember one of the most famous electronic music bands of the 80-90s, rather a duo, since there were only two components, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, it is Pet Shop Boys. If you don't know who I'm talking about and you like "synthpop" don't stop going to Google because you'll find a lot of musical gems that in many cases laid the foundations of current electronic music.

This album, the third of his discography, was released at the height of the "boom" of house and acid-house music in 1988. Several of its songs were specially produced to be played in dance music clubs. In addition, tools were used that at that time were practically inaccessible to the rest of mortals such as "Fairlight", with which they could even make orchestral arrangements and sounds of any instrument, this is normal today with any DAW and a PC , but in 1988 it was "the best". The success of their two previous albums allowed them, so to speak, to do what they wanted without limit when it came to producing.

image.png

As was normal in this type of music, it was also accompanied by a good number of remixes and maxi-singles. Almost every track on the record was radio hits and played ad nauseam in nightclubs across Europe, but it was "Always In My Mind" and "Left To My Own Devices" that really made waves around the world. Pet Shop Boys were already very well known but this LP was perhaps the one that made them a mass success.

I already told in another post of this series that I had worked in a club in those years precisely and I experienced firsthand all that movement, in which electronic music went from being something experimental and rare to being the music par excellence of nightclubs where the people went crazy dancing. There was already dance music, the 70s showed it to us with bands like Earth Wind and Fire, Boney M, Bee Gees or ELO, but the real novelty was the exclusive use of synthesizers, samples, sequencers, etc., that is, electronic music in pure state, digital sound. Nowadays, with modern computers it is something normal, in those years it was very difficult to access this type of equipment due to its price and the difficulty to find it in music stores.

image.png

The Pet Shop Boys were not the duo that brought about this whole movement, but they did contribute to making it music for the whole world, not only for the "weirdos" who used to take drugs and practically dressed up to go to the disco, in addition to carrying out the electronic music on another level. Electronic music followed a much more complex process in which many bands participated that even contributed new instruments such as the "Vocoder" invented by the Kraftwerk band. In "My Vinyl Collection" we will meet more protagonists of the movement in the future.

image.png

As always I will leave you YouTube links with the full album and with my favorite song from it so you can listen to it. It's hard not to end the album wanting to hear more from this duo or repeat some of their songs, and if you like it, don't stop looking for remixes and extended versions, there are some exquisite ones.
