Boy bands are still popular now, that's because of Kpop groups who are dominating the music scene. There are boy bands already back then, but interests has grown higher back in 1990s.

During the first half of 1990s, Boyz II Men were popular with millions of albums sold, and successful singles. But a seemingly different kinds of boy bands exist during the time of Backstreet Boys by mid-1990s. That was the era when boy bands emerged more, and at the same time, received criticisms and stigma. However, boy band popularity intensified until early 2000s.

Backstreet Boys will remind you of the top boy band by late 1980s and early 1990s, New Kids on the Block. Boy bands during the peak of Backstreet Boys used to dance and with great choreography. However, there are bands who sings mostly ballads such as Boyzone, and their successor Westlife. Though, those two bads attempted to dance in their concerts, and at least they did it for their fans.

By late 1990s and early 2000s, Backstreet Boys had a clear rivalry with NSYNC, which broke the all-time record for fastest selling album in 2000. That time, the BSB popularity is delcining slowly, as NSYNC emerged. Meanwhile, these two boy bands were unknown in their own country when they debuted.

Westlife's popularity in Europe, particularly in UK, is well-recorded. They had broke records with consecutive number 1 singles in UK. Their success continued in some territories for more than a decade. Blue, from UK, stepped up with series of hit singles and album in their hometown, which quite ended after half a decade.

Boy bands was forgotten from pop-sphere during teh rest of 2000s, as NSYNC had undergone indefinite hiatus. Backstreet Boys released records with reunion albums, but they didn't sell that well.

By early 2010s, a boy band from UK emerged, and became the number 1 boy band of their time. They're the One Direction. After being formed on X-Factor UK by Simon Cowell, their popularity skyrocketed. Number 1 albums, hit singles, sold out tours, top selling merchandises, etc. Those are what they achieved. After five number 1 albums, the band took hiatus after their first album without Zayn, who left several months before. Well, it's notable that boy bands at that time isn't about choreography. One Direction doesn't have the dancing skills, which is required the time of late 1990s boy bands!

By the second half of 2010s and early 2020s, Korean pop boy bands are gaining momentum. BTS is undoubtedly the most popular one after millions of albums sold, which started to South Korea, and spdead accross the globe. Their new album *Map of the Soul: 7* sold more than 3 million in just a week. What's admirable about the guys is they have great choreography, and they sing live. They may have started without creative input for their music, now, they have the power to create songs according to what they wanted.
