Update on the "Error" Quarter
A while back, I posted this quarter I found in my change. I suggested it was an error coin, that something went wrong at the mint to cause this damage.
I asked the HIVE community for suggestions and some confirmed mint damage, others suggested damage outside of the mint.
The more I looked at it, the more I suspected this was something other than mint damage. But I wanted to have error coin enthusiasts give their assessment over what happened to cause this odd deformity.
I joined an error coin forum, so I could post images of the quarter, to get the community's evaluation of whether this is an error or not.
The Assessment
I posted an overview of the coin with photos to identify if this was an error coin.
After a few days, one of the members responded and informed me this is not a mint error:
Not a Mint Error
So after all that, this is not a mint error after all. My guess is that it was damaged inside some sort of vending machine, or coin sorting machine. The edge of the quarter appears to have been bent up with another coin on top forming the round fold, while the raised edge rubbed against something metal which flattened the raised edge.
That is the best explanation of what happened. There's a good chance the coin was jammed pretty well into whatever machine did this damage, but the user got it out and put it back into circulation.
So now we know and knowing is half the battle.

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin
We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.
No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13
Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny
Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations. Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books. I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.

Definitely not a mint error looking at it. It's bizarre what some people do to their pocket change! It's fun finding a true error, keep on looking and thanks for sharing!

I'll keep looking for REAL error coins in my change!
Every now and again you will find a real beauty. Planchet clips, double dies... I love collecting error coins!
It looks like it was damaged in some sort of hydraulic press, or maybe the Quarter was used to jack up a car or something. The edge looks like it was filed down for some reason.
It's difficult to know what exactly happened, it might be intentional, but more likely two quarters got stuck side-by-side in a vending machine and one got bent. That explains the filing of the raised portion. Not sure, but that's my best guess.
A little disappointed it's not an error, but I can see why it's not.
That’s e exactly what i thought
I was hopeful, but upon further reflection and wise HIVE council I realized it was just a messed up coin. Bummer.

That is quite interesting, Benjamin.
Great detective work on your part.

Thanks!
My first impression was correct.
But I don't believe this kind of damage is caused by coin handling receptacles and equipment.
