What Does It Look Like to Pray in the Spirit?
Many evangelicals will demonstrate evidence of the Spirit by the speaking in tongues, which I've always understood as speaking in a foreign tongue, useful in the situation where people of different cultures and languages are present.
I believe the Holy Spirit is practical. And of course "spiritual".
The Spirit helps our weaknesses: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered and he that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27
Groanings
As the situation continues to decline in this country, as a new order is becoming externalized world-wide, great spiritual evil is becoming evident. It is ugly.
I am exhausted as I groan; all night long I drench my bed in tears; my tears saturate the cushion beneath me. Psalm 6:6
It takes a certain "giving up" before allowing ourselves to drench our beds with tears - we may grieve, we may worry, we may complain. But to "groan" is exhausting and involves many tears.
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice. Psalm 55:17
Three Times a Day
Daniel was in a similar situation as believers today - so many are far away from the place where God placed His name, yet Daniel continued praying towards Jerusalem, even while it was a pile of rubble. Daniel continued his service to the Most High God, without ceasing.
[Daniel] went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God. Daniel 6:10
He did this, even while it was ILLEGAL!
"Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?" Daniel 6:20
Daniel was known by the king for praying continually and God saved him, even while being persecuted for his faithfulness.
Pray without ceasing, in every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God... 1 Thes 5:15-16
The Mark of God
I believe God allows tribulation because otherwise, we don't talk to Him. We thank Him, we request of Him, we praise Him. But do we cry out to Him? Do we groan over the abominations in our nation?
"Put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed" Ezekiel 9:4
If the beast is issuing a mark, we cannot receive that mark, other than the one placed upon us by God Himself.
To Pray Like Yeshua Prayed
For so many people, praying is just something done before bed, or before meals or when congregated together with other believers - but it seems as if praying the way Yeshua prayed is quite different. He did things on a very personal level.
In the days of his flesh, when [Yeshua] had offered up prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him. Hebrews 5:7-9
Are We Praying Correctly?
I say this to audit myself, too. We all need maturity in the Spirit and further obedience to the will of God.
