What is the True Value of Nickel?

Nickel is a war-time metal. Nickel, Platinum and Copper are the metals that are in biggest demand during war time. So much so that it was illegal to own platinum during WW2, and the US put silver (!) in "nickels" because the copper and nickel was in more demand. The US also replaced copper pennies with zinc, because the copper was in such demand.

There has been wars and rumours of wars for the last few years and something interesting happened to nickel last year: Nickel prices reached the moon!

Nickel price skyrocketed so high that trading was terminated until the price settled. It's difficult to discern exactly what happened, but it most likely had to do with... you guessed it. War.

Collecting 100% Nickel Nickels

Last year, I decided to add some Canadian nickels to my collection, just in case. It's difficult to imagine nickels being that valuable, but any coin that is 100% of anything has the potential of being very valuable, if that metal becomes valuable.

I invested in a stack of 40 uncirculated Canadian nickels from 1965. Made of 100% pure nickel, it was an opportunity to add this metal to my collection.

I didn't expect them to be uncirculated, I expected them to be pretty warn. I bought them for the metal content, not the numismatic value, but I'm happy they look so nice!

Nickel Price Today

After the "anomaly", nickel prices went back within the range of normalcy. Although it has been steadily rising over the last three years as the buying power of currency decreases.

The "melt" price of these nickels is nothing huge, although it is twice the face value. Adding the collectors value, these are likely worth maybe a quarter or more a piece. If nicely presented, maybe even a dollar at a coin dealership.

Nickel is about $10 USD per pound or $26K USD per ton. If we found ourselves in a war-time situation and resources were needed in every nation for their war-time efforts, the three metals that will be in demand: copper, nickel and platinum.

Will Nickel Be Legal to Own?

The difficulty of "war-time" is the massive authoritarian control that nations take against their own citizens. Often a collection of metals would be called "hoarding" and in some situations they can be confiscated by force. But not our benevolent government, it's not like they would issue a nation-wide house-arrest over a cold or anything. Not like they would issue "red-flag" tattle-tale laws as an excuse to confiscate weaponry because your neighbor doesn't like your home defense tactics.

If metals are owned as a collectors item or for historical or numismatic purposes, confiscation would be theft. But if they were melted down into bars, it would be considered "bullion" and too much bullion might be considered "hoarding" and action might be taken that it be put towards whatever war-time effort was in play. It would be your patriotic duty to surrender your hoard cheerfully and willingly, especially considering the gun aimed at your head.

I hope it doesn't come to that, especially over some shiny nickels! I have a family to take care of!
