Getting Ready for Camping: Double Cots!

avatar
(Edited)

Camping with a family of eight can be a challenge, but can also be very nice. We have eight brains, sixteen hands and sixteen feet. If everyone is working together, we can get a job done quickly!

One of the trickiest part of camping (besides meals) is sleeping estrangements edit: arrangements. Our tactic has been inflatable mattresses, but we discovered they have a difficult time staying fully inflated, something to do with changing air pressure. They also take up a ton of room in our tent.

Last camping trip, we had FOUR queen sized air mattresses, taking up almost all of the floor space. No storage underneath and a lot of stepping over (or on top of) squishy air mattresses. Not ideal.

So the solution is cots! But not just single cots, but cots that stack one on top of the other. Double cots!

It's called a "Portable Bunk Bed" and comes in two (quite heavy) bags. For our family, we purchase two bunk beds, so we have four (quite heavy) bags to bring with us. Thankfully, we're not hiking with these!

They can be set up as single beds or stacked to save room as a bunk bed. They also can be configured as a couch of sorts. Having two large couches in the tent will be great, especially if there is rain.

The bar in the back doesn't make this super comfy, unless you have good pillows or cushioning behind you.

We are very exciting about this new addition to our camping gear. This will make sleeping arrangements much easier, having four beds (two sets) and only one (or maybe two) air mattresses will save us a lot of space. We'll see how this goes later this week. We leave on Tuesday, it's coming quickly!

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin

We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.

No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny

Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations.

Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books. I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.

Bank Bailout Special!

It's happening, folks. The banks are going under! To educate our children about what is going on, there is a "Bank Bailout Book Bonanza" going on with the Tuttle Twins! Use coupon code FORTY for 40% off your purchase! Check out the books here.

The request list for boosts is long and we often don't have enough VP to go around for everyone. I knew you would understand.

I am so envious of you, camping is one of the things that I miss since my kids are all now grown. There were 7 of us in a tent, we primative camped on one of the islands on our river. The next day after school was out we left for one week, my husband's brother, he was single, his sister her husband, and their 2 kids, and my sister her husband, and their 2 kids also went with us. I would have loved to have the bunk bed cots because our tent was just like what you described, with no room to move around, and with afternoon thunderstorms, having to keep everything from touching the sides of the tent was hard to do.

Have fun and create memories that your children will never forget. Mine are all in their 40s and still talk about our camping trips. They also thank us for an awesome childhood. The best thing a parent can hear.

Don't be envious, camping with two adults and six children is a challenge. It's wonderful and exciting and full of adventure, but it's also an incredible amount of work. We do it to get better at it, more efficient, learn how to deal with issues, enjoy ourselves despite circumstances, learn what to bring and not to bring, what's useful or not. The bunkbed cots will make things much easier, we're really looking forward to that.

I went camping with my parents many times while I was young (under 12 or so), but as I got bigger our family didn't camp nearly as often. After getting married, I suggested going camping (Lauren had little experience) and I was shocked by how effort it takes - as a kid I remember the adults doing most of the work. As my family has been adding (young) children, the effort increases exponentially - but we are now beginning to see the payout: our children helped get things ready for the trip, they packed their own backpacks (WOW!), entertained the little ones while we packed the trailer, cleaned up from diner... so on and so on. And now Lauren is becoming a pro at this, and camping becomes more about enjoying the time, and less about MANAGING the time.

So the job of daddy and mommy is to have fun, be creative, enjoy nature and not complain about effort. Be a good example for our six little ones.

Everything you described is the same as what we went through with our children, except when they got older they did pack their own clothes but I always packed a bag with the clothes that I thought they would need, like sweatshirts for cool nights, extra long pants and undies. Keep building these good examples for your little ones and have an awesome time.
