Chopping Down Our Sad Old "Liberty Elm" Tree

Right about the time of Covid, we watched our "Liberty Elm" tree wither up and die. It was a beautiful tree but a number of summers ago we had a Japanese Beatle plague and they infected the Elm tree with "Dutch Elm Disease". This is the reason there are very few Elm trees around this area anymore.

For our family, watching our "Liberty Elm" tree die while locked down in our homes against our will, was pretty symbolic of how we were feeling at the time.

It took a whole season before the tree completely dried up. Intending to chop it down last summer, we never actually got to it. I did chop down some of the large lower branches, but the majority of the top crown still remained. It stood in out front yard, looking sad for an entire year... but now is the time to finally get rid of it.

It was very satisfying pulling the top of the tree down. The children were no where to be seen, but when they saw the tree half-way down, they inspected it.

Then began the tedious job of chopping all the branches to be burned in as firewood. The wood is very dry, perfect for burning.

All that remains now is the base of the tree, which we'll finish off next Sunday.

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin

We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.

No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny

Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations.

Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books.

Sad to see the tree come down …..
Glad you were able to take it down yourself without having to hire someone!👍😇

Yes, I was glad to save some money. A tree company removed the large Maple across the street, it would have been effortless for them to remove it, but we didn't ask. !BBH

Yes, sadly that species didn't fare well, though there are some strains that are resistant. I'm sorry to hear that you lost your elm, my friend. It's great that you're getting firewood from it, though. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

This was supposed to be one of those strains. We contacted the seller "Liberty Elm Institute", but we couldn't save the tree. !BBH

Oh bugger. I guess that 'resistant' is a bit of a relative term in this case. Do you think that you'll try again? 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Okay, you only want to chop it down when it's dry.
I guess it already said it's goodbye by drying off.

Yes, once it became dry and withered, we knew it was far gone, time to go. !BBH

That's sad but at least it has a beneficial use as well.

Maybe @gratefuleveryday could plant more "Liberty Elm" trees elsewhere, possibly in the sufficiently large yards of relatives or friends. 🤔🧘‍♂️🤓

Tall trees like that are planted far away from the house to avoid destruction.
But !INDEED if he has a large land he can do that.

I wonder if you could have done something (such as adding pesticides) to save the tree if you weren't confined to your homes when you noticed the tree getting infested. 🤔🧘‍♂️🤯 !HOPE

Anyway, even if it was sad for you to cut the tree, you at least got some great firewood from it! 🤗😎 !WEIRD !INDEED

The lower trunk is still standing! That means, the job is half done!

What are you going to do with the trunk? Is it good wood for furniture?
