The Snowberries Are Coming!……..My Actifit Report Card: July 27 2025

The Snowberries are coming! More on that in a minute.

Church was awesome this morning as usual. Pastor Kyle always has a thought provoking sermon. We are in a series called ‘ Only God can change a life’. Good stuff!

Once home, I set up to roast some coffee for us. There is nothing better than coffee fresh from the roaster! ☕️😋

A bit later, we set out for a hike up to the off grid cabin. Just at the crest of the hill, there is a bunch of undergrowth, which just happens to be snowberry bushes! What is a snowberry bush? It’s a plant that produces little white berries that offers a food source for birds and wildlife in the winter. GROK has this to say about them:

Snowberry bushes (genus Symphoricarpus) are deciduous shrubs native to North America, commonly found in temperate regions. They typically grow 3–6 feet tall and wide, with rounded, green leaves and small, bell-shaped pink or white flowers that bloom in summer. Their most distinctive feature is the clusters of white, waxy berries that appear in late summer to fall, which persist into winter. These berries are mildly toxic to humans, causing nausea or dizziness if ingested, but are a food source for birds and small mammals.
Snowberries thrive in various conditions, including full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils, making them popular in landscaping for hedges, erosion control, or ornamental purposes. Common species include Symphoricarpus albus (common snowberry) and Symphoricarpus orbiculatus (coralberry), with some varieties producing pink or reddish berries. They’re low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and attract pollinators like bees.

During the winter, especially in December and January, the forest is stark and mostly barren except for these little gems and of course the moss around here. The forest is littered with thousands of these snowberries!

This next picture is of a relative to the sunflower. I’ve forgotten the name but each flower is about a quarter of an inch across-a far cry from that of a sunflower!

It’s been a good day. Sometimes, when I sit down on the couch, Cyle will come join me. He’s not affectionate like Cot is, but he does have his moments. He likes to head butt me and maybe exfoliate my cheek with his rough little kitty tongue. Or, perhaps he just will want to snuggle up against my shoulder.

Such a sweet boy! 😻
