"The Man" - A Poem

Weren’t you the man?
Were you not everyone’s hero?
Oh yeah
That was you
Weren’t you the man?
Were you not
Positively legendary?
And didn’t you have a plan?
Wasn’t this supposed to be easy?
Or was that just more talk?
Weren’t you going to show us all
How to get things done
And walk, walk, walk that walk?
Weren’t you the man?
The people want plain answers
Little kids can understand
Yes or No
Were you or were you NOT
The man?

I should probably start by saying that if you're not from Trinidad, chances are this poem is about someone you've never heard of and that's cool. Everywhere around the world there are people who claim they can make quick work out of huge, complicated problems and it's not surprising to me when it turns out that they can't. Unrealistic bragging is usually the first sign for me that things will stay exactly as they are or get worse.

It still confuses me when crowds fall for that rhetoric and attribute superhero status to someone based on words about actions rather than actions themselves (or showy, counterproductive actions that don't really merit praise).

Anyway, before this turns into an essay and I end up skipping breakfast let me wrap this up.

Peace ☮️.
