I think you're right and nothing really makes any sense. I would think that somebody is ripping up the company except that everything is ruined, yet still mixed in with good stuff. You said the building is still standing oh, have you ever tried looking up the address to see if it really belongs to them or if somebody is stashing stuff that works there.
