Family History

Source I have no idea if my dad is in any of these. But he would have been in the area at the time.

Annnnd I'm back. Sometimes it's good to get away from the Hive for a few days.

It's been a busy weekend, but I found time to dig around the internet and find out a few things about my dad. As I get closer to my birthday at the end of the month my mind can't help but reflect on my life. I started thinking "What was my dad doing at my age?"

Now, I suppose I could have just asked him, but what's the fun in that? He has ties to politics, so I decided to check out his name with a few key words just to find out what is out there.

I found an entire resume.

Honestly, I was impressed. He spent his 20's and early 30's working for a congressman who then became a governor. I knew about that. But I didn't know much about what he was doing around the time I was born.

I was always told he was some kind of appointee in the Reagan administration, but I didn't know exactly what it was. It turns out it was an appointment to the Legal Services Corporation, as President, Vice President, and Secretary. Not sure what order he held those offices, but from what I found on Wikipedia about LSC, the early 1980's was a pretty tumultuous time for the organization. My dad was one of many recess appointments made during a time in which Reagan was trying to shut down the organization.

I love the idea that my dad was a warm body used to put a kink in government operations. "Hold this office, but don't do too much with it." Yes, slow down the bureaucracy!

With some more digging I was able to find a senate hearing that he participated in, and a bunch of minutes from various board meetings. I recognized a lot of names of various politicians and leaders. He bumped around with a lot of powerful people.

Basically by the time he was my age he was making a difference in the world. He was working with powerful people, pulling in a pretty good salary, and by most measures was successful.

So what am I doing?

I remember some of the people I met growing up. I have shaken hands with some amazing historical figures. I attended political conventions, I spent holidays with leaders of think-tanks and training organizations. I had connections through my father that could have put me on a very different path in life had I used them.

Initially, it was hard to see his success and compare it to my life. I'm not known. I'm not "successful" by most measures. I have a quiet blue collar life. I struggle to pay bills, I don't have clout, there won't be pdfs of Senate hearings with my name on them. Who is going to remember me when I am gone?

I have a very different life than him. But in a way, that's pretty awesome. He didn't compel me to follow his path. He included me in his world by taking me places and introducing me to people, but he let me take my own direction in life. I could have been a lawyer, I could have gotten into politics. I could live in completely different circumstances with completely different worries and struggles.

My life is my life. I can do with it whatever I want to do with it. My dad could very easily have cast me in his shadow, trying to chase his coattails and success. But he didn't. He didn't even brag about his past. I knew him primarily as a lawyer working on oil and gas leases for the Interior Department. He was "middle management" in my mind. I never felt like I had to live up to some big shot.

And I kinda like that.

Cool that found out some things about your father that you didn't know. And his letting you go our own way was cool.
