Casa Monica Hotel

St. Augustine's Casa Monica Hotel was built in 1888 by a Victorian architecture enthusiast named Franklin W. Smith. He had the building constructed out of poured concrete, a novel building material at the time.

It served as a hotel until the 1930's when it was shut down due to the Great Depression. In the 1960's it was revived as the St. John's County courthouse. In 1997 it was rejuvenated into its original purpose, once again becoming the hotel that it is today. Source.

I have walked by this building dozens of times without knowing the history behind it. I assumed it was a modern building because the renovations have been so well executed. Honestly, the only reason I noticed it among the other buildings is the completely asymmetrical windows.
