Sheesh! This book is exactly what my heart and soul needed.
Books themselves are magic, and when the book I'm reading is literally about magic, I feel like I'm truly transported elsewhere.... Away from this stressful world.
I may be suffering from recency bias, but my oh my 'Murtagh' could be as good as 'Inheritance' and I'm maybe like 43% through the book! It's hard to rank these books man, and the ending of 'Brisingr' was out of this world, even 'Eldest' was outstanding. I'll never forget how my jaw dropped when Thorn arrived and the Rider was revealed to be Murtagh! Ugh, ranking these books is really difficult, but I suppose that's a good thing. Maybe I shouldn't bother ranking them.
All I know is I'm having a great time. I'm grateful!
Also, 'Murtagh' has the benefit of a rich backstory and deep lore from 'The Inheritance Cycle' to fall back on and utilize as Murtagh and Thorn go about their adventure.
These chapters were full of information and intrigue. These werecats are so mysterious and knowledgeable. This apparent witch Bachel and her followers the 'Dreamers' intrigue me in a massive way. What in the world is up their sleeve? New Ra'zac could be born at some point? Plus many other bits of mysterious information and rumors floating about the land...
Bachel intrigues me the most though. Like, she is insanely random and seems to be growing in power which is shocking. The way she's growing influence under everyone's nose is rather mind boggling. Also, her very location up north, seemingly outside of mainland Alagaësia has me super excited to learn about what in the world she's up to! In general that portion of Alagaësia is so fun to even be talking about because besides certain moments early in 'The Inheritance Cycle' this land was not necessarily utilized much. But it's an important area! It's near Carvahall and it's quite near Du Weldenvarden, elf territory, as well.
It was a bit frustrating when Murtagh essentially got snagged by Lyreth right on the street but I kinda get it. Murtagh didn't want to cause a scene and I suppose he was attempting to get more information about things happening throughout Alagaësia...
Once it seemed that Lyreth was attempting to murder Murtagh (or that's what it seemed anyway) I was literally thinking 'Thorn needs to get off his lazy butt and DO SOMETHING'. He's been sitting on the sidelines for a lot of this book, which I understand as Murtagh and Thorn are in semi-hiding and their mission requires stealth etc. But Murtagh was in critical danger....
Then BAM Thorn comes along and just gets to WORK! 🔥It wasn't the most graceful rescue but he got the job done. He's still a pretty young dragon and he hasn't received the education that Saphira or even probably Fírnen has. So Thorn essentially smashed his way through the building that Murtagh was basically getting attacked in. Thorn was pretty incoherent and in pure adrenaline mode, but it was impressive nonetheless!
I just love the spirit of Murtagh and Thorn. They are powerful outsiders, with such a unique backstory slowly growing in strength. Serious wildcards, living their life. It's sort of hard to explain. They have great potential, similar to what Thorn said about magic.
I think there's something to be said about how these two are going through life on their own path. I think it will benefit them in the long run.
Anyways, Thorn made a MASSIVE entrance into Gil'ead and I'm curious how news of this entrance will travel through Alagaësia and impact their mission going forward...
Murtagh might meet Nasuada in person???
