World Elephant Day 🐘 /Dia mundial del elefante 🐘 (ENG/ESP)

The elephant is an animal admired by many that has come to symbolize in some cases, power and union, others attribute to them relationships such as abundance and prosperity. These magnificent and enormous animals are known for their large size characteristics, their magnificent ears that were the inspiration for a children's movie, their long troop and in some cases their impressive tusks, they have also inspired the creation of scale-size figures that are used in some homes as ornaments for the purpose of attracting abundance to those homes, But this majestic animal is threatened by several factors including the value given to the ivory of their tusks, due to the decline of elephants, the Foundation for the Reintroduction of Elephants, decided to celebrate August 12, the World Elephant Day, an initiative that aims to raise awareness about the endangered situation of these large mammals.

Welcome to my Blog.png

As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, they are mammals, but they are also pachyderms, but what is a pachyderm?

They are an ancient order of placental mammals, which grouped elephants (today order proboscideans), rhinoceroses and tapirs (today classified in the order of perissodactyls), wild boars and hippopotamuses (today framed in the order of artiodactyls) and manatees (today in the order of sirenians).

Pachyderms, as their name suggests, have in common the possession of a very thick skin and little hair, in addition to a large size and high weight, all of them the result of evolutionary convergence.

On the other hand elephants are characterized by things like: females live in herds which are led by a matriarch, this herd has a social structure where each member has tasks and between all females ensure the welfare of the offspring, males to reach a certain age live alone or in groups of singles or young elephants, the gestation period of elephants lasts 22 months and females give birth every 4 or 5 years.

On the other hand, the tusks of elephants have a purpose, they can be used to dig in the ground in times of drought and look for water, they are also used to move objects, collect food and logically to defend themselves, a curious fact is that elephants have a dominant tusk, in short they can be right or left handed and just as it happens with our teeth if an elephant loses a tusk, it will not grow back.

Now, there are only elephants in Africa and Asia, although they belong to the same family they have different characteristics of which I will not give more detail, but you can find information in any of the links at the end of the publication or using your internet search engine.

Like tigers, lions, whales and other animals elephants are threatened by various dangers which I will list below:

Loss of their habitat

As usual, humans have taken the spaces where the elephant lives in different ways and thus we have broken into their territories and, either by settlements, deforestation and even with the construction of transport routes, which can disrupt their migratory routes, mining and agricultural activities have also been influential in this regard.

Desire for Ivory

By now many of us know that elephant tusks are made of ivory and this is highly coveted in some parts of the world, attempts have been made to decrease this commercialization, but ironically while ivory marketing has been banned, in some countries and the number of elephant specimens worldwide has decreased; this boosted the demand for ivory on the black market, as well as its price. This obviously stimulates poaching of elephants even if they are in reserves or protected in some countries by legislation.

Use for work or entertainment>

We all know that in some countries elephants are used to perform tasks of transporting people or materials and food, without forgetting that they are used in shows such as Circuses and those in captivity in Zoos. Some of these animals are in critical conditions and are subjected to hours of work and often subjected to systematic mistreatment.

Thank you for reading.png

To say goodbye, it is important to point out that the elephant is the largest land mammal, besides having a fundamental role in the ecosystem, since they carry seeds in their digestive tract that they expel when they perform their needs and create paths in their migrations. So it is essential to save these animals from the dangers that threaten them and one way is to publicize their importance throughout the world, I leave hoping to have inspired you to investigate and promote more information about these beautiful animals.

Bienvenidos a mi blog.png
