En Asia habita el mamífero trepador más grande el mundo, tal vez no sea completamente agradable a los ojos, pero del cual deberíamos aprender mucho ya que son capaces de trasmitir conocimientos a sus descendientes, este no es otro que el Orangután, este peludo de un color característico se encuentra en peligro crítico de extinción de acuerdo a la Unión Internacional por la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN). Así con el propósito de crear conciencia de los valiosos que son y del daño que les hemos causado como humanos a esta especie, se celebra los 19 de agosto el Día Mundial del Orangután.

Lo primero a destacar de los orangutanes, es que se estima que llegaron a existir por millones, pero actualmente se estima que solo quedan entre 60.000 a 100.000 ejemplares en el mundo, este simio solo habita en el continente asiático y tiene un 97 % de similitud con el ADN del hombre y al igual que nosotros pertenece a la familia homínida.

La noción de homínido está vinculada a la evolución del ser humano. El término se utiliza para nombrar al ejemplar que pertenece al orden de los primates superiores, que tienen al ser humano (Homo sapiens) como la única especie que sobrevive.

Se puede considerar, por otra parte, a los homínidos como la familia de los primates hominoideos que incluye tanto al ser humano como a sus parientes más cercanos: los chimpancés, los bonobos, los gorilas y los orangutanes.

Entre las características resaltantes de estos simios tenemos que tienen brazos muy largos que pueden llegar a medir 2 metros, pudiendo llegar a pesar 120 kilos, su pelaje es de color rojizo o naranja, además de tener cabeza grande y labios abultados.

Ahora bien, si algo distingue a estos animales es la capacidad que tiene de trasmitir conocimientos, lo que los hace inteligentes, a diferencia de otros simios viven vidas solitarias, solo se reúnen para aparearse y la madre cría sola a su cría, alrededor de 8 años, durante los cuales le enseña todo lo que ella aprendió de su madre. En cuanto a su alimentación los orangutanes se alimentan de frutas y las hojas de los arbustos.

Las principales causantes de la desaparición de estos inteligentes animales son la pérdida de su territorio para la siembra de plantas productoras de aceite, la caza ilegal, ya que su manos son usadas como ceniceros y su uso comercial como mascotas, sobre esto último les contare brevemente sobre al caso de Pony una Orangután que fue prostituida por 7 años, gracias a esfuerzos actualmente está libre, pero las secuelas del abuso y maltrato todavía la afectan, esto es solo un ejemplo de lo malvado que puede llegar a ser la humanidad, dejo un enlace para los que deseen saber más de su historia.

Como dato curios su nombre proviene de las palabras malayas e indonesias "orang" (persona) y "hutan" (bosque): "persona del bosque", además es el mamífero de más lenta reproducción en el mundo, esto último influye para su desaparición.

Para concluir, creo que es importante la conservación de esta especie ya que su inteligencia es innegable, además, de que son animales que forman parte del ecosistema y es un animal del que podemos aprender mucho por su inteligencia y forma de vida, así que, para preservarlo, aunque no estamos cerca de él, podemos dar a conocer su situación actual con la intención de hacerla viral y sensibilizar a las autoridades y sombrar en las generaciones futuras el respeto y mor por esta especie.
