Día Internacional del Animal sin Hogar/ International Homeless Animals Day (ESP/ENG)

Many times when walking the streets, we can find kittens or puppies of those who are called strays, for those who know me, either by reading my publications, related to animal issues or by attending my program "Patas Arriba" in @laradio, know that I prefer the term, animal in street condition, the reason, they did not choose to be there, some are born in the street, because still in many parts of the world, the rescue and sterilization of these animals has not been taken seriously or what is worse many people who have bought or adopted and then for some reason, throw these animals to the streets and abandon them to their fate, so in the world there are many homeless animals and since 1992 the International Day of the Homeless Animal is celebrated on August 17.

The creators of this celebration are the International Society for Animal Rights, better known as ISAR, located in the USA and its intention is to raise awareness, not only to their country, but the whole world of the large number of animals that have no home, as these in many countries have multiplied so much that have come to overpopulate the streets, as I mentioned this situation is not only due to dogs that are born and live on the streets, also due to the abandonment of many animals, by those who at some point bought or adopted them.

The main reasons why a pet is abandoned are the following:

***Ignorance of the responsibilities that a companion animal carries: ***In previous publications, I have mentioned that adopting a pet is not something that should be taken lightly, because it is a life that will be under our responsibility for some years and depending on the animal, so will be the responsibilities, take it for a walk, clean the sandbox, comb it, feed it, bathe it, change its water, in short, many times this is not taken into account, when making the purchase of the animal or adoption, being carried away only by the emotion, the consequence ends up being the abandonment of the animal since no one wants to take responsibility for the responsibility.

Household economy: This point is closely related to the previous one because many times we forget that the animal that we decide to include in the family, we must buy food, annual vaccinations and that if the animal gets sick it requires to attend the veterinarian and the purchase of medicines, only the food depending on the size of the animal will imply a cost, without counting as I already pointed out some emergency, so many families or keepers, before the illness of the animal or the impossibility of giving it food, decide to abandon it.

Uncontrolled births: many people and/or families sometimes refuse to spay or neuter their pets, others do not have the possibility of paying for it, so when the females arrive in a pregnant state, they are thrown to the street without compassion, and many times the owners themselves do not realize that they are in heat, they let them out or escape and thus unwanted pregnancies occur.

Now, let's talk now about what we can do to celebrate this day and avoid more abandonment, the first thing is the responsible keeping if you already have an animal or you are thinking of having one you must keep in mind that it is a responsibility for years that will involve food, care, love, monetary investment and time, sterilize to avoid unwanted pregnancies in females and injuries in males or even that they get lost, it is wise to sterilize at a certain age and so you will be calmer, now, If you do not have a pet at home my recommendation is that you adopt*** an animal of the many that are in shelters waiting for a second chance or if you have found one in the street that you like and you bring him food often think about taking him home and include him as part of the family, he will give you love and eternal gratitude and you will be happy to have taken off the street a being that can spend days without eating or drinking, that can be a victim of abuse, suffer from cold and many other dangers to which animals are exposed in the streets.

In conclusion, I ask you to become more sensitive and have respect for the animals that have no home and that if you have one at home you love it and take care of it as it truly deserves it, so that the statistics of animals in street conditions do not continue to increase.
