The king of the jungle, this is the title that long ago was given to the Lion, a majestic animal, which lives in herd in Africa and has been threatened by poaching, invasion of territory, among many others, if something has characterized the lions for years and has given us reason to admire it, is the beautiful mane that the males have, this animal also became popular, as it is the presenter of MGM movies, which has also been given a place in the zodiac signs, so the lion has its world day, is celebrated on August 10, so this publication will be dedicated to this beautiful animal.

In the past days I made a publication to celebrate the International Tiger Day now it is the turn of another beautiful feline, which, as I already mentioned is admired for its great beauty, this is the Lion, the only one of the big cats that lives in a herd, this obviously besides making it unique implies a hierarchy and distribution of work.

First of all, the females are the ones that carry out the hunting tasks and the male only intervenes if the prey is too big to be taken down by the females, besides the male is the first to feed, his task is to provide protection to the herd, which he accomplishes by patrolling his territory, this territory is marked with urine and the lion or lions announce their presence with their famous roars, with which he warns possible invaders to keep their distance. Another fact is that females stay in their prides, but young males are banished by their parents when they begin to grow their mane.

Now, what is the purpose of this day, as it happens with the Tiger the Lion, who is the second largest feline in the world, is threatened, it is estimated that more than 45% of the lions have disappeared in the last 20 years, the reasons are already known, but many times things are known and forgotten, sadly humans have a terrible memory, so I will list some of the causes for which the lions are being affected.

The loss of habitat, as it usually happens we humans have invaded the spaces where the lion lives and if these felines are considered a threat then they are killed, human conflicts, this point is closely related to the previous one, since when invading their territories and many times when putting within reach of the lion preys easier to hunt or when hunting the preys which the lion usually hunts, the lion is forced to look for another one, which ends very badly, usually for the King of the Jungle, poaching, this is another problem and the main threat against lions, the best known case being that of Cecil the lion, poaching seeks not only to place trophies on the walls of hunters, but also to trade their skin, meat and bones for medicinal purposes, used by traditional Chinese medicine, and finally captivity, poaching although used primarily for the sale of lion parts, sometimes it is to capture a specimen alive, with the purpose of commercializing it, for private entertainment shows or as exotic pets.

An interesting fact that I can not let pass is that the creation of this day is due to a very sad fact and was the hunting of the lion named Cecil, in 2015, which occurred in a national park in Zimbabwe, Africa, this lion was hunted outside its natural reserve and skinned, commissioned by an American dentist. This hunt caused outrage and complaints against poaching in certain regions of Africa, generating strong demonstrations in the world and giving rise to the creation of this date which was established by National Geographic, with the aim of raising awareness of the situation of these big cats.

El rey de la selva, este es el título que hace ya mucho se le dio al León, un majestuoso animal, que vive en manada en África y que se ha visto amenazado por la caza furtiva, invasión de territorio, entre muchas otras, si algo ha caracterizado a los leones durante años y nos ha dado motivos para admirarlo, es la hermoso melena que poseen los machos, este animal se hizo también popular, ya que es el presentador de las películas de MGM, al que también se le ha otorgado un lugar en los signos zodiacales, así el león tiene su día mundial, se celebra los 10 de agosto, así que esta publicación la dedicare a este hermoso animal.

En días pasados realice una publicación por celebrarse el Dia internacional del Tigre ahora es el turno de otro hermoso felino, el cual, como ya mencione es admirado, por su gran belleza, este es el León, el único de los grandes felinos que vive en manada, esto obviamente además de hacerlo único implica una jerarquía y distribución de labores.

Primeramente, las hembras son las que realizan las labores de cacería y, el macho solo interviene si la presa es muy grande para ser derribada por las hembras, además el macho es el primero en alimentarse, su labor es la de proporcionar protección a la manada, la cual cumple patrullando su territorio, este territorio es marcado con orina y el o los leones anuncian su presencia con sus famosos rugidos, con los cuales les advierte a posibles invasores que mantengan su distancia. Otro dato es que las hembras se mantienen en sus manadas, pero los machos jóvenes son desterrados por sus padres al comenzar a crecer su melena.

Ahora bien, cual es el propósito de este día, como ocurre con el Tigre el León, quien es el segundo felino mas grande del mundo, se encuentra en amenazado, se estima que mas del 45% de los leones ha desaparecido en los últimos 20 años, las razones son ya conocidas, pero muchas veces las cosas por sabidas se cayán y por cayadas se olvidan, tristemente los humanos tenemos una memoria terrible, así que enumerare algunos de las causas por las cuales los leones están siendo afectados.

La pérdida de hábitat, como suele ocurrir los eres humanos hemos invadido los espacios donde habita el León y si se considera que estos felinos son una amenaza pues se les da muerte, *** los conflictos humanos***, este punto está estrechamente relacionado con el anterior ya que al invadir sus territorios y muchas veces al poner al alcance del león presas más fáciles de cazar o al cazar las presas las cuales, el habitualmente caza, el león es forzado buscar otro, lo que termina muy mal, por lo regular para el Rey de la Selva, la caza furtiva, este es otro de los problemas y la principal amenaza en contra de los leones, siendo el caso más conocido el del león Cecil, la caza furtiva busca además de colocar trofeos en las paredes de cazadores, el comercio de su piel, carne y huesos con fines medicinales, utilizados por la medicina tradicional china, y finalmente el cautiverio, la caza furtiva aunque se usa primordialmente para la venta de las partes del León, en ocasiones es para lograr la captura de algún ejemplar con vida, con el propósito de comercializarlo, para espectáculos privados de entretenimiento o como mascotas exóticas.

Un dato interesante y que no puedo dejar pasar es que la creación de este día se debe a un hecho muy triste y fue la cacería del León de nombre Cecil, en el año 2015, la cual ocurrió en un parque nacional en Zimbabue, África., este león fue cazado fuera de su reserva natural y desollado, por encargo de un dentista norteamericano. Esta cacería causó indignación y denuncias contra la caza furtiva en ciertas regiones de África, generando fuertes manifestaciones en el mundo y dando origen a la creación de esta fecha la cual fue establecida por National Geographic, con el objetivo de crear consciencia de la situación de estos grandes felinos.

Para concluir, como es mi costumbre hago un llamado para hacernos eco de fechas como esta y su importancia, ya que todos los animales y seres vivos tienen un papel dentro de los ecosistemas que están guardando un delicado equilibrio, así que les invito a sembrar en nosotros y las generaciones futuras el amor y respeto por estos seres.
